I have been working at Abcam full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Abcam has a great culture with everyone being almost universally friendly and collaborative. There is also a strong focus on work/life balance driven from the CEO down. You are not expected to be on email every minute of every day, with holidays being particularly protected.

Senior management are also clear that they expect people to do the right thing, not just the right thing for the business, with a focus on ethical and proper behaviour.

    Cons

There is a broad mix of skills and experience and in some areas the lack of experience can be felt. Everyone is enthusiastic but this enthusiasm, combined with a lack of experience can sometimes lead to less than preferable outcomes.

    Advice to Management

Keep the focus on culture and behaviour and build the skills and experience of the team.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Abcam (Cambridge, East of England, England) in September 2018.

    Interview

Firstly had a telephone interview asking a few questions on the company, my skills, experience and the role I had applied for. At the end they asked if I had any questions, whole thing took about 10 minutes. Got invited to an onsite interview about 2 weeks later, took just under 2 hours and consisted of 1 interview with the team leader and a scientist, a lab test (basically pipetting in a hood), lab and department tour, another interview with the head of department and then a meet the team. Really enjoyed my day, the first interview asked more general questions (they were all on a sheet), then there more technical questions related to the role. Second interview asked about my various research projects and was more of an informal chat and a get-to-know type interview. Everyone was so friendly, they care more about you as a person and how you'll fit into their working culture - very team oriented, motivational and friendly. At the 'meet the team' everyone just sat around and chatted, very chilled and enjoyable.
