I have been working at Auto Trader UK full-time (More than a year)
There is a high proportion of approachable and communicative developers which is often missing in tech. There is a widely accepted practice of pair programming which helps facilitate and encourage this kind of knowledge sharing.
Great company culture:
Relaxed but hard working culture. Little in the way pretentiousness, despite the size of the company and high individual skill levels. Lots of people genuinely invested in the company. A mostly shared collective sense of gratitude for an employer that has some sense of ethics, demonstrated through active groups like the women's network, the sustainability guild and mostly competent line management.
Holidays, flexibility, office environment, resources etc.
Interesting and Enjoyable Work:
Applications built mostly using new technologies meaning work seems relevant and varied. Good code practices are enforced through positive review processes which means less bugs and more features. Great automated test coverage and well established delivery pipelines resulting in even more coding and very little fixing builds.
- Current price freeze. Without much investigation I get the impression that the salaries are slightly lower than average.
Advice to Management
Keep it up.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Auto Trader UK (Manchester City Centre, England) in September 2019.
Short phone call with recruiter followed by on-site, consisting of values alignment section and presentation on previous work.
Seemed more concerned with ticking "aligns with company values" boxes than actually getting to know my approach to work and achievements - then had to cut the second section short due to time spent on the first. At time of interviewing no solid plan for the function of the role. I conclude this is a company where talk is more important than performance and in retrospect was immaterial whether I got an offer as would not have been right for me. Surprising due to company reputation so maybe just a facet of the particular department.
