Bruntwood – Why Work For Us?

Bruntwood Group has more than £1bn of assets under ownership across more than 100 properties in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham and a development pipeline of £1.4bn.

It is committed to helping make the UK’s great city regions even greater, investing for the long term to support growth and by creating the right places for business success.

Founded more than 40 years ago, the company employs more than 650 people. It is the majority shareholder in the UK’s leading science and technology park operator Manchester Science Partnerships; purchased Alderley Park in Cheshire in 2014 and in 2018 acquired Innovation Birmingham.

Circle Square, a 2.4 million sq ft new city centre neighbourhood in the heart of the Manchester Oxford Road Corridor innovation district, is a joint venture between Bruntwood and Select Property Group and is due to be two thirds complete by 2020.

Bruntwood is also Strategic Property Partner to the Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and a member of the influential business-led think-tank the Northern Powerhouse Partnership and the Midlands Engine.

Bruntwood and its people are passionate about supporting communities, arts and culture in the city regions where it invests. The company donates around 10% of annual profits to local good causes through the Oglesby Charitable Trust and is proud to support the Manchester International Festival and RHS Tatton Flower Show.

We are both creatively commercial and commercially creative

We are flexible and look for creative solutions that are commercially viable. We seek to balance our actions so that everything we do adds value and is sustainable over the long term.

"I have never worked for a company like Bruntwood. The values they share are amazing. The company is passionate about the customers and the staff. I will never seek alternative employment whilst there is a job here for me at Bruntwood."

We are good people to do business with

Doing business with us is straight-forward. People trust us to do the right thing, which sometimes means making tough decisions, but our goal is to create a win-win situation for everybody involved.

"Ongoing commitment to our cities, charities and the arts is something that I think is a lovely part of Bruntwood. It brings great opportunities for the team to connect with projects and programmes that they may not otherwise come into contact with and there is a pure element to the Bruntwood approach, as it is not a marketing ploy, this is a real, long-term passion and commitment."

We know that the little things help make the big things happen

From the design of our spaces to the way we interact with our people, we have an eye for detail and an uncompromising focus on the quality of experience we create. It's what sets us apart from the competition.

"I love working for Bruntwood. I love the open-mindedness of my colleagues and the atmosphere we create when welcoming customers into Bruntwood buildings. I love seeing the commitment and care that Bruntwood have for their customers - the little things really do make the big things happen."

We push ourselves to go further

For us, standing still is not an option. We see the big picture and everyday is an opportunity to move forward, challenge, innovate and make a change.

"Bruntwood never discourages innovation and change. If an individual is self-motivated to seek these things, there is every opportunity to explore this and, where appropriate, it is supported."

We don't sit on the sidelines

Bruntwood people are both interested and interesting. We care about the world around us and our instinct is always 'I must do something' rather than 'someone needs to do something'.

"I still believe that Bruntwood is an organisation that wants to do business in the right kind of way. There is a moral core in the business which stems from the family values and this aligns with my own beliefs about how business should work."

We’re committed to having a wider effect on local communities and are passionate about adding vibrancy to the cities we work in. That's why every year Bruntwood and the Oglesby family shareholders donate a figure in excess of 10% of profits to arts, charity, environmental and medical initiatives.

Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting

We partnered with the Royal Exchange Theatre to create the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting - the UK’s biggest national competition for playwriting. Since 2005, we’ve been searching for great new plays by great writers. And since then we’ve seen over 11,000 entries, 22 prize winners and 23 full productions.

Manchester International Festival

Manchester International Festival is the world’s first festival of new and original work. Launching in 2007 and taking place biennially, the festival is artist-led and commissions arrive from around the world. Bringing world premieres in performing arts, music, visual art and popular culture, MIF has been a huge addition to the city culturally, socially and economically and Bruntwood are proud to have been one of the first to support the internationally renowned event.

The Bruntwood Charity

The Bruntwood Charity supports four charities, one in each of the regions we operate in, and every year staff raise an average of £120,000. From volunteering through our Bruntwood Cares programme to running a marathon or abseiling down a building, they are encouraged to do what they can to make a difference, as well as making sure that they have a huge amount of fun in doing it. Through these activities, our people get to have fun together as well as meet with others from across the business that they might not otherwise meet in their day-to-day working lives.

Cares Days

Over 1,500 hours are spent volunteering by our staff through our Bruntwood Cares scheme every year. Staff are given two days each year to volunteer for community projects. Whether it’s helping school leavers with practice job interviews or renovating community health centres, there’s something for everyone. But staff also go one step further, lending their talents, making board-level commitments with organisations such as MIDAS, The Plaza Community Cinema and the Royal Manchester Hospital.

"The Cares Day Scheme is brilliant and I'm proud to be a part of it. Friends and family think it is a fantastic thing and wish they could do the same."

The Oglesby Charitable Trust

Established in 1992 by Founder of Bruntwood Michael Oglesby and his wife, Jean, the Oglesby Charitable Trust has supported over 300 charities across the North West. The aim of the Trust is to further improve the wellbeing of the region and its people through arts, education, environment and medical research activities, as well as tackling social inequality.

As a business based on relationships, we know that our people are our biggest asset. Bruntwood people play a fundamental role in delivering our brand promise, behaving according to the strong set of values we live by as a company.

We are family-owned and run and believe that the way that we work is as important as the work that we do. We base every aspect of our operation on a set of core values that have been instrumental in defining our company culture and therefore in delivering our success. It is this people-based and values-driven approach to doing business that we refer to as the Bruntwood way.

We recruit with a long-term focus, making sure through our recruitment process that we ensure not just that you are right for Bruntwood but also that Bruntwood is right for you. We focus on your skills and experience but above all we look for the right attitude, because we know that with the right people on board, there’s very little that we can’t achieve.
