ChipMOS tests unpackaged chips for flaws, then packages them in protective plastic casings for shipment to customers. The company began its existence as a factory of Mosel Vitelic and was later a joint venture of Mosel Vitelic and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) before being set up as an independent company in 2000. Mosel Vitelic, whose ProMOS affiliate accounts for 29% of ChipMOS's sales, still owns about 13% of the company. ChipMOS gets more than three-fourths of sales in Asia.
