It is not enough that we simply say we believe in something, we must take action. As a first step, we are doubling our funding to the Equal Justice Initiative to support the important work that they do to challenge racial and economic injustice in the United States. We are also actively exploring how to support affected communities through our pro bono work as we recognise that these events are a reality for people across the world. The Clifford Chance Academy

To ensure that all of our people have opportunities for professional and personal development, we established the Clifford Chance Academy. The Academy provides around 1500 business skills and legal training courses to our lawyers and business professionals.

The Academy offers a wide range of classroom and online legal and business skills training to lawyers and business services staff of all levels of experience. We are focused on aligning our learning and development programmes with our vision and strategy.

Our courses help our people develop consistently excellent legal, business and commercial skills, which will assist us as firm in meeting our goals, and be of life-long benefit to the individuals who participate in them. Courses are highly interactive and practical, delivered by expert trainers and specifically tailored to Clifford Chance.

We attach great importance to high-quality technical training for our lawyers, but our legal perspectives must be married with a sharp business focus. This depends on developing stronger understanding of clients' operating environments, so we have expanded programmes that support relationship-building, business development, management and sector focus workshops.

Global reach

Yves Wehrli, the Paris Office Managing Partner joined Clifford Chance in 1980 as a young trainee. He became a partner in 1988. Creating the Best Team

How We Do It

'Our ambition is to act for the world’s leading businesses on work that is most important to them. This means acting on instructions that are usually complex, multi-faceted and, more often than not, international. To deliver the very best solutions for our clients on their most significant challenges means bringing together the sum of all our creative talents as a dynamic and cohesive team'

Matthew Layton, Managing partner

At Clifford Chance we believe that inclusion is a core value of the law and specifically of our firm's values. We understand that inclusion is good for our staff and their families, our firm and our clients, and society. Our goal is to deliver an equality of opportunity, an equality of aspiration and an equality of experience to everyone who works in our firm.

We recognise that a true diversity of talent and experience is an essential ingredient in our success.

People & Inclusion

We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive workplace, and broadening the skills and experience of our people. Inclusivity, diversity, professional development and wellbeing are central to our strategy.

We believe that the best teams are diverse and inclusive, and that people flourish in an environment where they are supported in expanding their careers and developing their resilience. Our focus on inclusivity, development and wellbeing enables us to deliver better understanding and better advice to our clients, and ensures that we continue to attract, retain and develop the highest quality people.

We run numerous programmes and initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity and wellbeing at the firm, and have several growing diversity networks.

We have set a target for gender balance in our partnership, and made commitments around ethnic diversity, development and resilience. We are committed to supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Intersex (LGBTI) people in the workplace, and in 2018, added our signature to the UN's new Standards of Conduct for Business for Tackling Discrimination against LGBTI People.

We are committed to increasing diversity within the firm and report yearly on the inclusion and diversity commitments we have made. These include our target of improving the gender balance in our partnership, so that women make up at least 30%, and our undertaking to improve ethnic diversity within the firm.

We are focused on promoting social mobility, particularly through our London recruitment process, and are involved in a number of initiatives, which aim to attract and support employees from less advantaged backgrounds.

Inclusion and diversity is not just a commercial imperative for the firm. It is also important to our people, many of whom are involved in internal diversity networks, such as Arcus, our global LGBT+ network.

Our Expertise

Clifford Chance is one of the world's pre-eminent law firms. With a global reach and thousands of lawyers working from dozens of offices around the world, we offer expert advice to clients on all aspects of commercial law across our seven practice areas; Antirust, Capital Markets, Corporate, Finance, Litigation, Dispute Resolution & Risk Management, Real Estate, Tax, Pensions, Employment & Incentives.

We work with multinationals, governments and regulatory bodies across five continents. Many of our deals are newsworthy. Often they demand the kind of knowledge that only international, cross-practice teams can provide. Our reputation in the field is formidable. We have more band 1 rankings than any other firm in Chambers Global 2017. That's why organisations turn to us not just for legal expertise but for advice on their most critical business issues.

We are a truly pioneering law firm. Through seamless teamwork, we span jurisdictions, cultures and languages. Working together, we offer incomparable legal expertise.  It’s this sense of togetherness that makes us so remarkable. Client challenges rarely fall within one practice area, so specialists at every level combine their expertise to cut through the most complex of problems. The results are often unprecedented.  Join us as a lawyer, contribute, learn and grow.

Business Professionals Group

In the Business Professionals Group, our role is to deliver high quality expertise and support. Business professionals have a huge impact on our clients, by creating an environment whereby the quality, delivery and client service surrounding the legal advice we give, is second to none. Business professionals roles cover IT, HR, Business Development, Finance, Billing, Procurement, Communications, Knowledge and Information, Project Management, Risk and Compliance, Secretaries and Document production.

 Our offices

As one of the world’s main financial centres, London continues to be a key market and many of our global deals are led from what is still one of the world’s main financial centres in Canary Wharf. We have London roots that go back past the firm’s beginnings in 1987 to the early 1800s. Today, as we have done for the last 200 years, we work closely with domestic and international corporates, financial institutions, regulators and government and public-sector bodies.

Our Canary Wharf offices offer, we believe, one of the best working environments in London, with first-class facilities which range from a multi-faith prayer room, music practice rooms, wellness and fitness centre complete with swimming pool, to on-site hairdresser and in-house dining and café.

We established our Newcastle office in early 2018, where our team of more than 50 paralegals, senior paralegals and operations managers bring decades of experience, expertise and specialist knowledge to areas such as legal tech and process-driven service delivery.
The team in Newcastle works on matters for all the firm's practice areas, providing support for a range of legal tasks while ensuring that knowledge, resources, processes and technology are deployed effectively. Our Newcastle office offers the close-knit and inclusive culture of a smaller firm with the resources and support of a global elite law firm.

How We Do Business

We promote market-shaping practices in relation to ethics, professional standards and risk management, reflecting those values and issues that our clients have told us are most important to them.

As a Responsible Business, we seek to provide clients with a service that is informed and defined by the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and risk management. Our lawyers are encouraged not only to ensure that they advise clients within the technical confines of the law, but also to consider the policies and objectives behind relevant legal requirements. Through this approach, we aim to build trust and confidence in our clients, our people and wider society.

We take a global view of ethics, risk management and compliance, applying the same, highest possible standards to every part of our business, every office and every part of our firm, whether or not required by local law. We have created global processes to review our performance about those standards, involving senior management in each Clifford Chance office, co-ordinated and supported by our general counsel and central compliance function.
