Co-op – Why Work With Us?

The Co-op has been doing amazing things for the past 175 years. And we’ve been doing it together with our members, colleagues and communities. The clue’s in our name. Co-operate: it’s what we do. We’re proud that we make a positive difference – both close to home and around the globe.

We’re owned by our 4.6 million members who get a chance to have a say in how we’re run, which is why we have this connection to the people we serve. As well as having clear financial and operational objectives and employing nearly 70,000 people, we’re a recognised leader for our social goals and community-led programmes. We exist to meet members’ needs and stand up for the things they believe in. So, the more successful we are, the more we can give back to you and your local community. That’s why we’re different.

We’ve got a long and pioneering history behind us, and we’re proud of how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved in this time. Now we’re looking to the future with new ventures, stronger community initiatives and a talented team of colleagues who can help us build a stronger Co-op.

We’ve developed four simple phrases that describe what being a Co-op colleague is all about. They define what Being Co-op is- how we behave and how we work for the benefit of our members, customers and communities.

When you apply for a job at Co-op, we'll ask you to complete an online assessment to help us understand how closely your personal values and motivations match up to our ways of 'Being Co-op'.

  • Do what matters most
  • Be yourself, always
  • Show you care
  • Succeed together

There are also some great examples of colleagues #BeingCoop on Twitter.

As the UK’s largest convenience retailer, we’re proud to serve communities all over the country. We provide quality, ethical products at an affordable price and everything we do is focused on putting our customers’ needs first.

In 2017 our like-for-like sales grew for the third year running, and we’re always coming up with new ways of supporting communities locally and abroad. We’re the largest supplier of own brand Fairtrade products, and we’ve changed 1.5 million lives in Africa alone through the sales of our bottled water.

Co-op Funeralcare is a market leader. We’ve got more than 1,000 funeral homes across the UK and a reputation for delivering a caring, compassionate service. Careers here can be emotional but also incredibly fulfilling, offering you an opportunity to help people when they need it most.

At the moment we’re transforming our business and changing a very traditional industry in the process. We’re using digital technology, investing in our funeral homes and developing all kinds of new products so we can provide a more complete service that meets the changing needs of our members and customers.

Co-op Insurance helps our 1.4m customers protect the things they care about, offering services including motor, home, pet and travel insurance. We’ve been supporting communities for over 150 years, and we’re based in Manchester’s iconic grade 2 listed CIS tower, as well as sites in Nottingham and Bury St. Edmunds.

At the moment we’re investing in people and technology to help us achieve our goal of becoming market leaders in customer satisfaction. We’re also growing our product range, and our ground-breaking travel insurance is a great example of how we develop exciting new products by listening to what our members and customers need.

Legal and Life Planning

Co-op Legal Services and Life Planning was founded in 2006 to make legal services more affordable and accessible for consumers. We have over 500 colleagues based in Manchester, Sheffield, Stratford-upon-Avon and Bristol. And this year we’re planning to merge our business with Co-op Funeralcare so we can provide a more joined-up service to our members and customers.

In 2018 we’re going to focus on growing our probate services- offering help to bereaved families 24/7 online, over the phone and face-to-face. We’ll partner with other businesses so we can offer even more products, and we’ve recently acquired Simplify Probate – the UK’s second largest probate provider – so we can offer regulated probate services to more of our members and customers.

Co-op stores rely on our logistics depots to deliver the products our customers love. We have 12 depots across the UK and since we set up Britain’s first ever national distribution network in 1874, we’ve grown to employ over 1,200 colleagues in some of our larger depots. Every week logistics colleagues pick over 10 million cases of products, ready to be delivered to our 2,600 stores nationwide.

Continuous improvement is the name of the game in our state of the art depots. We encourage our logistics teams to share their ideas and help improve the way we work, and we’re investing in new technology to make our processes more efficient and improve product availability for our customers.

The Co-op digital team supports our digital transformation, creates products and services for Co-op businesses, and pioneers new ways for people to co-operate online.

So far, we’ve delivered a new Co-op Membership platform, lots of new Co-op websites, a digital system to help colleagues in our funeral homes (Co-op Guardian), and a new digital hub (The Federation) in central Manchester where like-minded organisations can work together for the benefit of our communities.

We work in an agile way, and we have communities of practice so colleagues can come together to share knowledge and learn new skills. We offer a flexible working environment, opportunities to develop your skills and the chance to help drive our digital transformation.

Corporate Functions

Our corporate functions give our businesses the support they need to deliver great service to our members, customers and communities. These teams are mostly based in Manchester at 1 Angel Square- one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly office buildings.

The corporate functions are where all Co-op colleagues come for expert support in areas like finance, IT, HR, marketing and property. It’s also where we create our Co-op difference, as some of the teams in this area help to manage our democracy and deliver our ethical policies.

Co-op creates an environment where people respect and celebrate each other’s individual differences. We embrace the talents, beliefs, backgrounds and abilities of all our colleagues. And it’s more than just an ethical decision.

We’re actively building diverse teams and we welcome applications from everyone. But we know that simply having a diverse workforce is not enough. We want to create an inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We celebrate our differences. And we recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.

Through our colleague networks, we’re championing best practice and a culture of fairness and equality. More about our networks:

Aspire is a community of colleagues who are passionate about personal development and gender equality. We’re fully inclusive and welcome colleagues of any gender to join our group.

We’ve been around for over six years now, and some of the things we’ve delivered include our mentoring programme, lunch and learn workshops, roundtable sessions for colleagues to share their career journey, and focus groups on numerous issues. We’ve also developed links to charities which support gender equality in our local communities.

espect is a network for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) colleagues. We have two simple aims: make sure LGBT+ colleagues can be themselves at work, and promote LGBT+ equality throughout the Co-op and beyond.

We think everyone has a responsibility to create a workplace where all colleagues can thrive. That’s why everyone is welcome to join Respect, whether you identify as LGBT+ or not.

Rise is a colleague network that focuses on increasing cultural awareness and ethnic diversity within the Co-op.

We know ethnic diversity is good for our business. A diverse company is better positioned to meet the needs of the future economy. And an inclusive organisation that supports and encourages all colleagues to bring their whole selves to work can reap the benefits of diverse ideas, backgrounds and perspectives.

The Youth Network

The Youth network connects young Co-op colleagues and offers advice and support in areas like career progression and development. We aim to tackle stigma surrounding young people.

Over 77% of our colleagues aged 24 and under would recommend Co-op as a great place to work. We want to make sure we retain and develop these talented young colleagues to grow the Co-op leaders of the future.

Lana's story

One of our colleagues, Lana, was supported every step of the way through her transgender journey by her Co-op family. It’s cases like this that make us proud of the community we’ve created and we’re confident that our example will be followed in years to come. Discover Lana's story here.

Colleague voice

Diversity is about more than where we come from, it’s also about embracing different ways of thinking and working. Our Colleague Voice forum gives all Co-op colleagues the chance to share their ideas on how we can improve our business. And our new wellbeing app gives our colleagues a platform where they can develop their confidence in and outside of work. It’s about creating one culture and one Co-op.

We’ve always stood for something different. For our members and customers we represent community and fairness. A business that genuinely cares about the world around it.

    I applied online. I interviewed at Co-op.

Easy, sit down, 1 to 1. Standard interview questions, character building. Not based on experience purely on behavioral management. The manager was nice and explained things clearly and slowly. Very easy interview
