Mission: Based in sunny Edinburgh, we’re on a mission to make businesses happier and more successful by putting them in control of their finances.

FreeAgent – Why Work With Us?

Right from the very start, our founders Ed, Olly and Roan were uncompromising on their vision of creating the kind of workplace culture they’d always wanted for themselves - somewhere you can be yourself and do your best work.

We've defined three core values that are really important to the way we work:

Own it!
Be empowered to tackle big hairy audacious goals, while accepting that we’re smarter together.

We relish accountability as our mandate for putting a dent in the Universe.

Enjoy it!
Life moves pretty fast. We work hard, and things get bumpy sometimes, but you should be enjoying the ride.

Stay curious, keep learning and be excellent to each other.

Be proud of it!
Sweat the details, be bold in your ambition and innovate by pushing the boundaries.

Above all, understand how you’re helping the customer.

We want to give everyone the opportunity to shape and influence where we are going. Regular planning sessions keep us focussed on strategic objectives and our weekly Town Hall meeting means everyone always knows what’s going on across the company.

Our IT team kit everyone out with MacBooks to make flexible working really easy and tools like Google Suite help our teams collaborate.

“Hack days”, twice a year allow us to take a couple days out from our regular roles to team up and work on anything we like, meaning new and creative ideas can be explored across the company.

We provide a comprehensive package of employee benefits, which have been carefully selected to protect you, to promote healthy lifestyles, and to give you peace of mind.

  • 33 days holiday: We add an extra day for every year you're here (up to 43 days). Public holidays are included and up to five days a year unpaid leave is also available.
  • Private medical plan: You'll get comprehensive private medical insurance and access to a health plan covering a wide range of healthcare expenses.
  • Company pension scheme: All FreeAgent employees are welcome to join our pension scheme. We'll match your contributions up to a maximum of 5% of your salary.
  • Life assurance: We hope it will never be needed, but you’ll have added protection with our lump-sum life assurance benefit.
  • Income protection: In case you are unable to work due to long-term incapacity, you’ll have income protection insurance.
  • Employee assistance: 24/7 access to free, confidential support and advice on a range of everyday issues including health and wellbeing, childcare, money, and legal issues.
  • Share scheme: You can access our Buy As You Earn scheme to purchase shares from your pre-tax salary
  • Cycle to work scheme: Fancy a canal-side cycle to work? We’ll help you purchase your bike and equipment tax free, through the government scheme.
  • Discounts galore!: Save money on a wide range of purchases - from half price gym membership and cinema tickets, to bargain holidays and phone contracts.

In our Edinburgh city centre office, you can enjoy our pool table, balcony, catered Friday lunches, drinks fridge, fresh fruit, coffee machine and much more! Our office is full of both social spaces and quiet places.

There are a range of FreeAgent clubs, activities (and Slack channels!) to help you get to know your colleagues better. From Monday running club and Wednesday yoga to our board games night and our #ot-cats Slack channel - there’s plenty around here for you to get stuck into!

Our Edinburgh HQ spans two floors and is full of goodies:

  • Fresh fruit (and a biscuit cupboard…)
  • A well-stocked drinks fridge
  • Pool table & table tennis
  • Balcony with Edinburgh castle views
  • Catered Friday lunch
  • Great coffee machine
  • Cake on your birthday
  • Events like quizzes, scavenger hunts & board game nights

Roughly 20% of our team work remotely and we want to make sure those colleagues feel just as much a part of the team as those of us who are office-based. From daily video calls just for chit chat, to our huge variety of Slack channels - we make every effort to make everyone feel welcome.

I have been working at FreeAgent full-time (Less than a year)

I've been with FreeAgent for a bit over 6 months now. A lot of people have joined with me and after me, as the company has ambitious growth plans. FreeAgent has a very good onboarding for new joiners, which makes you feel "at home" quickly.

The work is interesting, the people are great and supporting. Managers really care about their team and helping them progress in their careers. Great culture.

As someone else mentioned, it almost seems too good to be true!

    Difficult Interview

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at FreeAgent (Edinburgh, Scotland) in December 2018.

Had to fill in an online form with various questions, which lead to a telephone callback from the People Ops team as an initial screening.

Was then given a tech test to complete, which was submitted and subsequently discussed with the relevant team over Google Hangouts.

Was then invited on-site for a "Culture fit" interview, a pairing session with another dev, and finally an interview with the CTO.
