Gilead Sciences – Why Work For Us?

Gilead Sciences, Inc. is a research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative medicines in areas of unmet medical need. We strive to transform and simplify care for people with life-threatening illnesses around the world. Gilead's portfolio of products and pipeline of investigational drugs includes treatments for HIV/AIDS, liver diseases, cancer, inflammatory and respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular conditions.

Our portfolio of marketed products includes complete treatment regimens for HIV infection available in a once-daily single pill, the first oral pill available to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV-1 infection in HIV-1 negative individuals at high-risk adults when used in combination with safer sex practices and treatments to treat chronic HCV.

Strength Through Partnership

Collaborations of all kinds – with partners in science, academia, business and local communities – are central to our work. Partnerships enhance our ability to develop innovative medicines and deliver them to people as efficiently as possible.

Growing Worldwide Reach

Founded in 1987 in Foster City, California, Gilead has grown to become one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical companies, with more than 9,000 employees across six continents.

Our Employee Culture

At Gilead we are proud to have some of the world’s most talented and dedicated people from across the research, healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and business sectors, working together to help make a real difference in the lives of patients.

As a global workforce we are deeply committed to helping solve some of today’s biggest healthcare challenges and bringing forth solutions for patients suffering from life-threatening diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Liver Disease, Oncology & Respiratory Disease. At our core lies a corporate culture committed to science and patients, and an employee culture that fosters innovation, diversity and a commitment to the progression and personal development of all our colleagues.

As we grow, we are continually looking to connect with outstanding individuals who are interested in joining our intellectually stimulating and socially responsible team. Successful colleagues at Gilead come from all backgrounds, have a range of perspectives and thrive in an agile and rapidly evolving environment.

Inclusion & Diversity

In 2016, Gilead added Inclusion as one of the company’s five core values. That’s because we know that we are stronger and more innovative at Gilead when we are informed by a diverse set of backgrounds, experiences and points of view.

Our Inclusion & Diversity program aims to promote an inclusive and high-performing workplace culture. We want all of our colleagues to embrace and leverage each other’s talents and diverse perspectives, foster a sense of belonging, achieve their full career potential and contribute to Gilead’s success.

Why Gilead Gives

With each new drug discovery, Gilead seeks to improve the care of millions of patients living with life-threatening diseases around the world, including regions where access to medicine is limited or does not yet exist.

Gilead recognizes that patients and communities often face challenges in accessing the best possible care, and we know that passion for scientific discovery alone — and that Gilead alone — cannot solve these challenges. This is why, through our grantee programs, Gilead works hard to foster deep and enduring relationships with patient advocates, nonprofits and healthcare professionals around the world who work tirelessly in local communities to improve people’s lives day after day.

Gilead works with organizations across all our therapeutic areas, partnering to advance the goals of our giving mission: to improve health access, eliminate the barriers to healthcare encountered by underserved populations, advance education among healthcare professionals and support the local communities in which we operate.

In 2015, Gilead increased its global contributions by more than 60 percent, providing funds to nearly 2,000 nonprofit organizations that are widening access, reducing disparities and advancing education for healthcare professionals around the world.

To help reduce the number of new HIV infections, Gilead gave $11 million to 101 community organizations that educate their members about the role of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis as part of comprehensive HIV prevention.

Gilead’s tiered pricing and generic licensing model have enabled access to life-saving medicines for nearly nine million people in the developing world.

Gilead’s Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS) program addresses systemic and institutional barriers to routine HIV and HCV screening and access to care in 18 of the most vulnerable U.S. cities

Career Management

As we strive to solve some of the biggest healthcare challenges today, each person at Gilead plays a critical and visible role in helping to bring important new therapies to people who need them. At the same time, every individuals career development and growth is important.

Career development is built on a partnership of three players: the employee, the manager and the organization. This partnership delivers on Gilead’s career promise to ensure employees remain relevant (current on skills), ready (for what’s next for you and the industry) and resilient (as our industry, jobs and professions evolve).

Careers are unique and personal, so taking ownership, seeking support and understanding organizational opportunities are critical to each individuals success.

Each summer, Gilead invites exceptional students to experience what it’s like to work at our research, development and manufacturing centers at our worldwide headquarters in Foster City, California.

A paid internship with Gilead offers students the opportunity to jump straight into impactful project work in an environment where employees and interns intellectually challenge each other to help ensure the advancement of life-changing therapies to patients in need.

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Gilead Sciences in February 2017.

Recruiter was condescending and asked very few questions before hanging up. Recruiter seemed like they had already made up their mind before interviewing me, which begs the question of why they even bothered to waste my time if they had already decided not to hire me.
