I have been working at Grove Collaborative full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I’ll start with what Grove Collaborative is - a B-Corp that puts people and our planet at the core of everything we do.
Grove is the fastest growing retailer of natural and sustainable products and we help families across the US make healthy choices for themselves and our environment. I was looking to join a company that stood for something beyond the bottom line and Grove is my place.

But, beyond our mission, there are so many things that make Grove an incredible place to work. Here’s a list:

    1) The team at Grove is rare - super engaged, smart people who genuinely care about each other and want their teammates to succeed. The leadership team built a culture that treats people like people (not employee numbers); that's reflected in many areas from the work-life balance we have to the respect and support given for new ideas. 2) The office is gorgeous. There are a few techie or design blogs that have posted about it so look at those photos but it is one of the most calming, mindful spaces I have ever worked. The office is just one way that Grove shows it values and invests in its people. The company wants people to feel excited about coming to work and puts a lot of effort into making that happen. From a design-centric office to thoughtful events to off-sites and trainings. We have a VIBE squad that finds new ways to bring more positive vibes to Grove from spirit days to speakers. 3) Clear vision + clear goals + trusting leadership team = the freedom to think creatively about how to bring our vision to life. 4) Every time a customer orders from us, it’s a win for our planet. This is such a rewarding feeling and its really interesting and I feel good about what I’m spending my time on. 5) Grove has real product market fit in a massive market and is growing very fast. That definitely comes with some growing pains. But it also comes with a chance to be part of a company tackling a large, important challenge and that is successfully creating rapid change.

    Cons

We're in a rapid growth phase and we have some pains but they feel challenging in all the best ways. We've moved from being a small organization, where you can be relatively flat, to a company of hundreds, where we're working on improving communication and streamlining processes. At times, this can be frustrating but it's also expected and something that I'm glad we're going through as its the result of growth.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Grove Collaborative (San Francisco, CA (US)) in January 2018.

    Interview

The candidate is given a take-home programming assignment that is to be completed along with unit tests in about a day . It tests the candidate's knowledge of frontend programming skills (or backend if you apply for a backend engineer position), use of programming language constructs, object oriented programming and knowledge of algorithms and data structures.

After the take-home assignment is completed, if selected, you get called for an on-site interview. The on-site interview questions were very easy. They test communication skills, general design skills.

    Interview Questions

    • Given a list of stores with their latitude and longitude in the US, find the "crow flying distance" to store nearest to an arbitrary US address. Use Google's Geocoding API if necessary to convert an address to a latitude/longitude.   1 Answer
