Mission: Our aim is simple; to be the UK’s number one place for people’s savings and investments.
A big thank you to GCHQ for visiting us this week to share the steps they've taken to become a more inclusive place to work. The very insightful talk was arranged by HL's LGBT+ Network as part of our #LGBTHM19 activities.
Happy Wednesday. We're reaching for some fruit from our mid-week delivery to start the day.
We’re the UK’s number 1 investment platform for private investors, based in Bristol, where we now employ over 1,400 people. For more than 35 years we’ve helped investors save time, tax and money on their investments. Today we are trusted with more than £86 billion by 1,015,000 clients.
We aim to help make more of our clients’ investments by giving them the tools and information to make their own informed decisions. From our award-winning website and apps that give clients access to their investments anytime, to our specialist Bristol-based helpdesks available directly with no automated menu systems; our aim is to simplify people’s financial life by making it easy and straight-forward to manage their investments and pensions.
Our success is largely down to the quality of the staff we have recruited and the culture they have adopted to do everything. Several new recruits who have started in junior positions and have been able to demonstrate a real passion for our culture as well as ability, have progressed to very senior positions and places on the Board. This can be repeated in the future.
An important part of our culture is everyone endeavours to take responsibility for the whole firm - we hope to never hear the words "oh that's another part of the firm". One firm mentality stretches across the organisation. Indeed we all sit in the open plan, we all have similar equipment on our desks, we all sit in the same chairs. Many great friendships have been formed amongst staff. We work for each other.
Our clients appreciate the way we treat them courteously and always respond by email or letter. If we say we shall phone them back unlike almost any other organisation in the country WE DO.
We always make sure we look after our existing clients before seeking new business. Our clients are the most important part of our organisation.
At Hargreaves Lansdown we believe in nurturing innovation, integrity and the brightest ideas. We consider that to be the key to our current and future success.
We feel we have a workplace like no other, with constant learning, dynamic teams and a great ethos.
Our number 1 priority is to deliver ‘knock your socks off’ service to each individual client. Our core values and purpose informs and drives every decision made within the business; from our newest recruit to our CEO, our HL ethos runs throughout our entire HL community.
· Care – Put the client first
· Service – Go the extra mile
· Integrity – Do the right thing
· Simplicity – make it easy
· Innovative – Do it better
An in-house policy
We do everything relating to our business ourselves; marketing, advertising, processing, the maintenance and design of our website, and we develop and own all of our computer systems. We do this because we want that expertise within our business. We don't use expensive consultants to do things we can do ourselves. If we don't know how to do it ourselves we learn. We pay for external help only when it is too risky, expensive or foolish to do something ourselves.
We have a very successful business and this means that we can provide exceptional rewards.
Hargreaves Lansdown is an innovative, rapidly expanding business with over 900 employees. We are always looking to recruit talented people who are willing to work hard and be part of our future success.
Charlie Huggins shares his experience of working at Hargreaves Lansdown.
Our graduate scheme has a simple purpose: to find future leaders and give them the tools to succeed.
On this bespoke two year programme hand-picked graduates will experience many of the departments that underpin our company, directing their own career path. During the scheme you will:
Alongside your departmental rotations, you will work with senior managers and directors to develop skills such as leadership, presenting, and lateral thinking. Hargreaves Lansdown will support you in studying towards professional qualifications that fit your chosen career path.
There is no better way to build a wealth of experience and a rounded skillset. Within the space of a few months, you may find yourself producing marketing for our 750,000 clients, developing for our award winning website and mobile apps, or analysing the business to identify inefficiencies and opportunities.
Each graduate is personally mentored and the scheme is designed to suit them. At the end of the two years we will work to find a role which matches your personal skills and ambitions.

I worked at Hargreaves Lansdown full-time (Less than a year)
- Lovely colleagues
- Upper management are incredibly supportive, approachable and willing to listen to new ideas.
- Office is well designed and pleasant to be in
- Career progression can be very rewarding if you're pro-active
- Training and educational support is always at hand
- Ethical company with strong ties to its foundation
- Great team socials
- Management make a real effort for colleagues to be regularly rewarded (yoga classes, occasional free lunches/pizza delivery, generous bar tabs, healthy mind sessions)
- Pay and bonus is quite low for the responsibility/dedication required.
- Overtime is an essential daily routine
- Understaffed (but allows for more extensive training/progression)
Advice to Management
- Increase salary or introduce better overtime pay
- Introduce a better training plan for new joiners for departments
- Better benefits would be a bonus (pension contributions are far too low for a financial services company, private medical should be standard to include mental health service provision for all staff)
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Hargreaves Lansdown (Bristol, England) in April 2018.
Arrived -> presentation -> -> 'tell us a fun fact about yourself' -> teambuilding exercise -> maths and writing test -> interview with mix of questions, some situational ones 'if you had an angry customer, how would you react?' and some competency ones
