Company Updates

  • A big thank you to GCHQ for visiting us this week to share the steps they've taken to become a more inclusive place to work. The very insightful talk was arranged by HL's LGBT+ Network as part of our #LGBTHM19 activities.

  • We've been celebrating tax year end this week, with pizzas during the late shift and breakfast rolls this morning - we've been keeping our energy levels up!

Hargreaves Lansdown – Why Work For Us?

Tab 1 – About us

We’re the UK’s number 1 investment platform for private investors, based in Bristol, where we now employ over 1,700 people. For more than 35 years we’ve helped investors save time, tax and money on their investments. Today we are trusted with more than £86 billion by 1.2 million clients.

We aim to help make more of our clients’ investments by giving them the tools and information to make their own informed decisions. From our award-winning website and apps that give clients access to their investments anytime, to our specialist Bristol-based helpdesks available directly with no automated menu systems; our aim is to simplify people’s financial life by making it easy and straight-forward to manage their investments and pensions.

Our Clients

Our clients appreciate the way we treat them courteously and always respond by email or letter. If we say we’ll phone them back, unlike almost any other organisation in the country, we will.

We always make sure we look after our existing clients before seeking new business. Our clients are the most important part of our organisation.

Our Values

Our number 1 priority is to deliver ‘knock your socks off’ service to each individual client. Our core values and purpose informs and drives every decision made within the business; from our newest recruit to our CEO, our HL ethos runs throughout our entire HL community.

  • Care – Put the client first
  • Service – Go the extra mile
  • Integrity – Do the right thing
  • Simplicity – Make it easy
  • Innovative – Do it better

About Hargreaves Lansdown

Our success is largely down to the quality of the staff we have recruited and the culture they have adopted to everything they do. Several new recruits who have started in junior positions and have demonstrated a real passion for our culture as well as ability and have progressed senior positons within the team. This can be repeated in the future.

Culture and Diversity

We believe in building a culture at HL that attracts and values people from all backgrounds, life experiences, preferences and beliefs. It’s important that our people are recognised as individuals, respecting their unique perspectives and the way they contribute to the diversity of thought within HL.

Charters

We don’t stop striving for positive change and growth within our business and industry.

We believe in nurturing innovation, integrity and the brightest ideas - a diverse workforce is key to our success.

By joining charters, we’re able to expand our support locally and nationally.

Women in Finance Charter

We’re a member of the Women in Finance Charter, a government initiative which promotes diversity and inclusion. Our aim is to increase female representation at senior management level to between 25 - 30% by 2021.

30% Club

HL are proud to support the 30% Club, works to increase the numbers of women on FTSE-100 boards, as well as supporting diversity at all levels.

Bristol Equality Charter

The Bristol Equality Charter has been set up to help improve equality, diversity and inclusion across Bristol. We’re proud to have been involved from the outset of this great initiative.

Giving Back

Making a positive difference in society is important to us. In September 2016 we launched the HL Charitable Foundation to help support the local community. The Foundation, with the help of the HL people has raised tens of thousands of pounds so far towards the employee’s chosen charities.

Volunteering

2019 saw the beginning of our very own volunteering policy. HL employees have 2 days to take away from the office to volunteer for any charity they wish - meaning our employees can give back to a cause of their individual choice.

Mentoring

Mentoring can be another great development tool to help grow confidence and capability in the workplace. Our mentoring scheme works to facilitate a trusted, non – judgemental space where mentees can gain support with their career from a colleague.

This working relationship gives time for the mentee to explore and reflect on their strengths and areas for growth.

We feel so strongly in the value of mentoring that HL recently helped to launch the 1st South West Mentoring Awards. These awards recognise organisations and people who have been inspired, developed themselves and improved their workplace through mentoring, either as a mentor or mentee.

HL hosted the awards ceremony on the 19th March 2019. It was a great success – and something we’re keen to build on next year!

HL Networks

Community starts inside the office and we’ve developed a selection of internal networks. These groups come together to socialise, support, raise awareness and bring change.

Community Engagement

Helping support the Bristol community so that everyone can thrive, providing financial education, promoting volunteering and community outreach to HL colleagues.

Environment

We aim to help HL take responsibility for understanding, measuring and reducing its direct and indirect environmental impact – encouraging everyone to lead a more sustainable life.

Cultural Diversity

Aiming to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion in HL, organising cultural events, promoting learning and understanding, and encouraging a diverse HL social community.

Gender Diversity

Helping colleagues understand the benefits of gender diversity, helping to create a level playing field with equal opportunities for all.

Mental Fitness

Promoting wellbeing by enabling open and honest conversation about mental health.

Kaleidoscope (LGBT+)

Working to encourage a culture of respect and equality for colleagues and clients regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, without fear of discrimination.

Sports and Social Groups

Aiming to improve colleague engagement by increasing participation in HL’s existing sports teams, clubs, and gaming groups. Our groups include; Board Games, Football, Golf, Gaming, Netball, Running, Squash, HL Touch Rugby, Yoga.

Bristol: A Great Place to Be

We’re lucky to be based in the heart of Bristol within a stone’s throw of the historic harbour.

A buzzing multicultural city with a population of over 400,000, there’s always something going on here. From festivals devoted to food, hot air balloons and graffiti to cat pubs and theatres in breweries, it’s fair to say Bristol is a unique city.

There's plenty within reach of Bristol as well. London is just 120 miles away, but in under an hour you can find yourself in the lush countryside of Wales, Devon or the Cotswolds.

Back on the harbourside, our modern, glass-walled building catches the best of the morning and evening light and lunch hours are often spent on the harbourside with a view of the sailing ships and historic docks.

Benefits

We’ve worked to get together an HL Reward package that is right for our employees – providing them with flexibility, value and choice. There are core and flexible/voluntary benefits on offer to suit your lifestyle and needs.

To help our people choose the benefits they value most, we’ve grouped these into 4 categories;

Protection – Peace of mind for you and your loved ones e.g. life cover, income protection, critical illness

Health – Supporting your wellbeing e.g. health screening, healthcare,

Financial – Saving over the long term e.g. pension, sharesave, travel ticket loans

Lifestyle – For things your enjoy in life e.g. holiday purchase, cycle to work, gym membership

Career Development – Your Future with HL

Our aim is to make sure our employees have everything that they need to reach their full potential. Providing the right development opportunities is key to this.

Our Career Development plan gives structure to assist our employees in improving their performance in their current role, as well as planning for their future career progression. Our values are weaved into every role level, to describe not only the skills needed but also the behaviours.

With technical and managerial paths, there are options for anyone looking to move forward in their career. Our internal courses are open to any level, in any area of the business, and also provide a great opportunity to network with other departments.

Graduate Scheme

Our rotational graduate scheme involves three month rotations in different job roles, which could include finance, investment, operations and marketing. You’ll build your career path and specialise at the end of the two year programme. While moving across the business, you’ll get a feel for what the departments do, how they fit together, and where they’re going.

With previous graduates and senior managers as your mentors, we’ll support you through professional qualifications, while you find the career that’s right for you.

What would you do on the graduate scheme?

Your journey might involve being first port of call for clients on the helpdesks, or speaking to fund managers as part of the investment team. You could be at the heart of client insight, seeing what goes on in the digital marketing department, or liaising with the financial advisers.

You’ll be coming up with ideas to deliver innovation, while building lasting relationships throughout the business. We’ll work with you to find you a role that matches your personal skills and ambitions.

We don’t have a ‘type’, but we do have a vision. We make it easy for our clients. You’ll learn to balance your time around different projects, so you can drive progress, demonstrate leadership and try to do it better, every step of the way.

Apprenticeships

Who can be an Apprentice?

You could be leaving School, College or University. You could have very little work experience or lots of work experience, be a returning parent or a retiree.

We know that when you are learning your new career you will need support to help you reach your potential. You’ll have a manager who supports you to succeed through regular one to one’s. Apprentices are also given an on the job buddy to show you the ropes, answer your questions and coach you through challenges.

Placement Scheme

University placements

Gain an insight into what life at Hl is really like – with a 12 month University Placement.

We offer placements in a variety of business areas as well as plenty of side projects to get involved in. You’ll also work on a real life client focussed project with other placement students, which you’ll present back to our CEO.

What would you get from a Placement year at HL?

  • A chance to gain knowledge and enhance your current skill set
  • A mentor who you will meet with regularly and support you throughout your year
  • The opportunity to present to our CEO
  • Meet and work with people around our business, plus the flexibility to work in other departments
  • Insight into future careers at HL, including our graduate scheme

Internships

We offer a small number of Internships within HL every summer, for between 6-12 weeks, depending on your availability. HL Internships are bespoke each year and only provided in the areas of the business that we know will enable you to make an impact for the short time you spend with us.

Past Interns have joined teams within some of our IT, Operations and Corporate Responsibility departments.

Why should you choose an HL Apprenticeship?

We are a successful and growing business in the heart of the vibrant City of Bristol, this growth provides our Apprentices with the opportunity to be one of the team immediately doing real work that has a direct impact on business outcomes. We handpick our training and education providers and work in partnership with them to ensure our Apprentices reach their goals in their career and education.

I have been working at Hargreaves Lansdown part-time (More than a year)

    - Huge focus on client service and doing the right thing
    - Lots of positive changes to the culture of the business – agile teams, flexible working, better benefits, more open about the future strategy/goals
    - Nice people who genuinely want to work here (on the whole)
    - Good opportunities for internal movements and secondments, with minimal experience requirements
    - Nice office location, with a lot of social activity – drinks evenings, healthy living events, a big annual Winter Ball, sports groups and little touches like champagne, new starters bags and advert calendars
    - New opportunities to get involved in things like mentoring and volunteering, and generally doing more in the local community
    - Much better benefits package than a few years ago – especially the pension contributions and additional holiday purchase scheme
    - The business is starting to adopt more flexible working options - some working from home, part time hours, evening shifts

    Cons
