Company Updates

  • From the 2nd-6th September for National Payroll week our team of intrepid adventurers cycled 280 miles across the week, finishing with a walk up to the summit of Snowdon, all in aid of Rainbows Children’s Hospice in which we raised £6,000 for! Ensuring people are paid accurately, and on time is absolutely crucial. Millions of people around the UK and the world rely on their weekly or monthly salary to keep a roof over their head and to look after their family. And this importance on family is why we’re raising money for Rainbows Children’s Hospice with our little test of strength and endurance. Rainbows are an amazing charity offering support to life-limited children and their families across the East Midlands. Payroll week is our chance to shine a light on the payroll professionals who ensure the workforce is paid for their hard work. And we have so many people at MHR who ensure our customers have accurate and reliable payroll.

  • On Friday 15th October, we hosted the annual employee long service lunch. This celebration is held in recognition of those who have worked at MHR for 10 years or more. More than 100 people attended the event this year, with a combined service in excess of over 10,000 years expertise across our industry! The event enables colleagues from across the business to meet, share stories and experiences, and inevitably discuss how the business has changed, grown and continued to be successful during the years they have been employed. The event was enjoyed by all present and the ever increasing number of attendees is testament to what makes MHR an employer of choice for many.

MHR – Why Work With Us?

Our people are our business. To deliver our market leading software and services, we need market leading people. That’s why we are committed to developing our employees and providing opportunities for their personal and professional growth.

Last year, we celebrated the internal promotion of 30% of our current employees.

We provided fully funded external and internal training such as qualifications from: the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals, the Chartered Institute of Personal Development, the Chartered Management Institute, the Charter Institute of Marketing and PRINCE 2 qualifications to name but a few, along with many other courses from our tailored internal training programme.

Innovation in software and services is in our DNA, and so it’s important to us that we promote skills and support our local communities.

We sponsor Hack24, an event that provides a forum to share ideas and develop the technical industry and technical skills in Nottingham.

Through events such as Women in Tech we work closely with our community to encourage diversity and inclusion in our workforce.

In conjunction with local universities, we run development sessions for students and internship programmes to provide opportunities to develop their skills in the workplace.

And it’s not all work.

We have a strong social network at MHR, with employee-run clubs; from football teams and pub quizzes to music groups and book clubs, there’s always something going on.

At our Annual Company Meeting, we showcase the finalists of a companywide video competition, with some very professional and often funny entries.

Our Graduate Programme

Our Graduate Management Programme offers university graduates a high calibre of training and experience across multiple disciplines throughout our business. During the two years, our graduates are assigned projects relating to real business problems whilst being supported by a mentor in order to thrive. All our graduates are given the opportunity to work in their preferred area of the business after they complete their rotational plan and an international placement.

Meet Our Current Graduates:

Jo Howell

As the newest graduate to join MHR, I am excited for the range of learning opportunities I will experience in my placements. With limited business experience before starting, I appreciate the variety offered in our rotational scheme and how it introduces me to the different roles that make up a company. MHR encourages continued development of their employees and their local communities, and I'm thrilled to be a part of that.

Beth Fear

I’m currently one year into the scheme and my journey has been fantastic. The business has taught me a mass of intelligence regarding so many different areas, from how to face daily challenges as part of a growing company to how departments integrate and communicate in order to carry out a project successfully. It has also taught me a lot of personal lessons about aspiring to be the best you can and the importance of always upskilling yourself at any given opportunity.

Meet Some of our Past Graduates:

Laura Timms

From day one, I have been given opportunities to take responsibility of large projects and make decisions that are important to the whole business, which is something that I honestly believe is rare on most graduate schemes. After finishing the programme, I moved into the Analytics division as Product Marketing Manager and now I head up the Product Strategy Team.

Andy Hames

After completing a technical IT degree in computer networks I was keen to get exposure to non-technical business activities. Moving rapidly between projects and departments also taught me to be highly adaptable to business challenges. I am now in the US as the Senior Vice President Global Operations.

Laura Cottam

Since joining the programme, I have had the opportunity to work with the marketing and product teams and been involved in some really interesting projects. It’s been a real learning curve and given me an opportunity to prove what I am capable of. Since the programme, I have worked in the Product Planning department as a Business Analyst before moving into my current role as a Solutions Consultant.

Ed Mills

In every project I worked with senior people who taught me a huge amount about business. The company offered me opportunities to develop and progress whilst working with colleagues at every level. After finishing the programme in 2008 I was appointed Marketing Manager before moving on to become a Business Development Manager. My current role is Head of Customer Relationship.

Partnering with MHR will allow us to focus on our strategic HR priorities, which are our people and our culture, and ensure peace of mind regarding concerns such as legislative compliance or potential infrastructure issues. Outsourcing elements of our payroll process, including BACS payments and reporting accountabilities, to MHR will also reduce the administrative burden." Richard Miles-Thorne, Deputy Head of People Services, Admiral Group plc

“We selected MHR due to the quality of its people and services, including the location of its operations." Carole Wigley, HR Director, Freeths

“We are pleased to be working in collaboration with MHR. The trust’s payroll system was implemented many years ago and no longer meets our needs. MHR provides a flexible, modern solution, which not only ensures that our 3,500 staff are appropriately paid, but also makes sure we can effectively manage other human resource issues in the organisation.” Eric Morton, Chief Executive, Chesterfield Royal Hospital

I have been working at MHR full-time (More than 10 years)

If you are driven and willing to work hard there are many opportunities within MHR to progress and experience different roles. Having worked for MHR for nearly 14 years I have now worked in 3 different departments and been promoted many times. Your efforts and achievements are recognised and there is an internal social hub where anyone can recognise anyone else so is completely transparent and non-corporate. This creates a real team and family culture within the business.
Good salaries and benefits are offered, free parking, onsite subsidised canteen and company continually growing with exciting future plans

Dress code is a little old fashioned, whilst I am a firm believer in business dress the code could be modernised slightly.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, the company is expanding and it is a welcoming family business. An incredible response to the current pandemic by the SLT - no furloughing, no redundancies, just plain hard work and clever strategic thinking to get us through this.

    Easy Interview

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at MHR.

First phone interview, second interview in person with HR and line manager, final interview with CEO and Director of the department. Final interview formal, at Ruddington Hall and had to give a presentation. All went fine and they asked when I could start and what salary I was looking for (I was well within their range).

    Then nothing.

They ghosted me, and just readvertised the position with a new agency. Didn't let me know, didn't call or take my calls, didn't respond to my polite emails asking if there is any movement. For an HR company, this is incredibly rude and inappropriate IMHO.

Two afternoons off work and 50 quid on taxis wasted on a firm that doesn't even bother to tell you you were unsuccessful. Very disappointing performance on their part.
