Nando's UK & IRE – Why Work With Us?

Today, there are over 400 Nando’s restaurants in the UK and Ireland, but our story starts long before the first UK restaurant opened in the West London suburb of Ealing. It’s a story of discovery, passion and ambition. It’s an evolving story too, so while we always look back on where we’ve come from with pride, it’s where we’re going next that really gets us excited. Have a read for yourself and see if you agree.

Our way of working

Our main aim is to simply create memorable experiences for everyone who has a bit (or a lot) of Nando’s in their life – our customers, communities, founders and suppliers. In fact, it’s everyone we work with. How do we do it? Good question.

It really comes down to the fact that we genuinely care for one another. We want everyone in our family to be happy and succeed, so we keep an eye out for each other, inspire each other and celebrate with each other.
Our informal approach to work means we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and that everyone can be true to themselves. Who we are at work is who we are at home.

Since the very beginning, our values have been our guiding light. Pride, passion, courage, integrity and most of all family, are the 5 things we live and breathe, every day.

Everyone at Nando’s has their own story relating to one or more of our values…

"Why Nando’s?" That’s a good question, but also a question with no definitive answer. In fact, if you asked everyone who worked for us, you’d probably get a different answer every time. For some it may be the fact that we’re the kind of name that’s on everyone’s lips. For others it may be the fact that we’ve won awards for being a great place to work and continually invest in our people. To be on the safe side, we’ll go over a few of the reasons why people join us.

We invest a great deal in helping you to be yourself at your best. Whether that’s helping you to fulfil your full potential in your current role or help you aim even higher, we’ll work with you to make sure it happens. When you’re enjoying your experience with us, our customers find themselves smiling too.

It doesn’t matter where you join us, in the first month we’ll show you the basics and continue from there. Everyone has their own preferred way of learning, so our training programmes are tailored to individual needs, putting you in control of your own journey. Whether it’s learning new skills, learning about yourself, learning from others, we’ll provide the map and guidance. You choose the route and destination, and as with everything else at Nando’s, you can be assured that we make it fun.

Room For Just About Everyone

Decisions, decisions. Deciding which role is right for you is probably up there with working out which bite to go for after you’ve just ordered the Wing Roulette. The good thing is, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done in the past, there’s almost certainly a role here with your name on it. Here’s a quick overview. Delve deeper for more.

  • Work experience: We’re passionate about giving real opportunities to young people across the UK. So you’ll regularly find us working alongside organisations to offer work experience in our restaurants.
  • Community activity: Our family culture means we love doing things together, and no more so than when it’s for a great cause. All over the UK, our restaurants choose to act on causes close to their hearts.
  • Diversity: We’re proud to be home to people from all kinds of different backgrounds, but to us, diversity is more than creating an inclusive culture. It’s about maximising the opportunity our diverse opinions and talents can bring to the business.

  • No chuckin’ our chicken: At the end of a business day, most of our restaurants freeze our excess chicken and hand it over to soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
  • Food waste: Best waste is no waste at all. However, for the unavoidable food waste, over half of our restaurants send it off to anaerobic digesters to be used as fuel to make electricity and fertiliser.
  • Sourcing policies: All our chicken is Red Tractor, even in Ireland. We’re also committed to sustainable sourcing. 100% of our soya and palm oil used as ingredients is certified sustainable.

  • Recycling: More than 95% of our restaurant's sort dry mixed recycling (glass, cardboard, plastic), and over 50% are able to recycle the food waste too. (Increasing every day!) We also recycle the cooking oil and even our uniforms and donate unwanted equipment and furniture to charity.
  • Heat Recovery: Our grills are hot. About 270 degrees hhhot. Since 2010 we’ve used waste heat from the grills to heat the water at our new builds and refurbishments. This means using less electricity as a result.
  • Offices: It’s not a big part of our impact, but we’ve made some changes. We segregate all our waste in our offices, fitted LED lights, switched to double-sided printing, drink Fair Trade brews and tap water, and we’ve cold-heartedly ditched plastic cups.

Nando's are looking for a Data Engineer to join our ever-expanding Technology Team.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to analyse data, provide insights and be a proponent of the shift to a more data driven Nando's. This will enable us to solve some of today's complex hospitality problems by creating innovative solutions using an open technology toolset whilst driving best practices.

Based in South West London and working in our Data Engineering team, although we have a remote working model too, you’ll be helping us develop our data lake and data warehouse. The work is varied, from creating new products and features to improving existing functionality. We strive to build a better customer experience and a better codebase. This is real growth at pace.

You will be using AWS, GCP, Apache Airflow, Python and SQL to interpret data from a wide range of sources and deliver it to all parts of the business, for example finance, operations and marketing.

We currently have 100 billion rows of data and growing.

Our Data Engineers have the opportunity to work across a wide range of domains, and to embed a data-driven attitude for solving challenges.

They ensure the "voice of our data" is heard and understood as part of our decision making process.

As a Nando's Data Engineer you will...

  • Be responsible for Nando's big data ecosystem
  • Design, monitor and maintain the data lake and data warehouse infrastructure

  • Transform raw data into purified data sets
  • Facilitate any data requests made
  • Monitor data acquisition

  • Writing great code - We understand code is read more than it’s written, better off tested and maintainability is a must
  • Helping shape what we build - You’ll be working closely with product owners, designers and other engineers to design and refine our work. We work as a team and your input is key
  • Owning delivery - We’re obsessed with shipping value; you’ll own work beyond just a pull request. You’ll care about bugs, scalability, uptime and other non-functional requirements
  • Growing together - You’ll review other’s work and happily seek feedback on yours to ensure we build a better codebase and sharpen each other's skills

  • Happy in the Clouds - Our Cloud Native platform is hosted in AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. You’ll be comfortable working with a system that supports users from around the world, at scale

You will also display:

  • Analytical problem-solving approach, coupled with effective communication skills - Before jumping into action you make sure you understand the issue at hand
  • Bias for action, and a sense of ownership - You see a problem, you fix the problem. You get buy in for your solutions and keep tickets moving. We’re always looking for ways to ship at pace
  • Well-principled - Especially in the craft of Software Engineering – you will understand deeply: modularity, testability, extensibility, scalability etc

    Senior Software Engineer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in London, England
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Nando's UK & IRE (London, England) in March 2020.

    The worst interview process ever.

every interaction took at least 1 week, constantly had to chase the HR for a reply. which indicates how chaotic they really are as the HR is supposed to represent the best of the company to the outside world/

the salary they offer considering the amount of firefighting and oncall duty you would have to do is very low compared to other roles in the market, its almost embarrassing.

my suggestion is either to totally avoid or if you go with an interview, try to get an offer and use the offer to negotiate a better rate with a more reputable organization that you are interviewing with.

    Interview Questions

    • 1 phone interview just talking about the project, I was told that they had a terrible legacy system written in .net and they had to constantly firefight to support the daily business and if coming along on call would be just part of the job.

      1. coding test the usual, mars rover kata. the person who reviewd the code was totally unaware of latest best practices and so picky about the smallest things, basically unless you write the code they way he would you wont pass this stage, a total waste of time.   1 Answer
