Ofqual – Why Work With Us?

Who we are

Ofqual was set up in April 2010 under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 and is also covered by the Education Act 2011.

We’re a non-ministerial government department with jurisdiction in England. We have 200 permanent employees as of January 2019 and are based in central Coventry.

As the independent regulator of general and vocational qualifications in England, Ofqual’s job is to ensure the maintenance of standards, to make sure that qualifications accurately reflect the knowledge and skills people need to achieve their goals.

We regulate 146 awarding organisations who make available around 15,000 qualifications and issue 11 million certificates a year. Sometimes things can go wrong and so the work of the complaints team is essential to ensure that the interests of learners are protected and to uphold public confidence in qualifications.

Responsibilities

We’re responsible for making sure that:

  • regulated qualifications reliably indicate the knowledge, skills and understanding students have demonstrated
  • assessments and exams show what a student has achieved
  • people have confidence in the qualifications that we regulate
  • students and teachers have information on the full range of qualifications that we regulate

Goals and objectives

Goal 1: Regulate for the validity and safe delivery of general qualifications

Goal 2: Regulate for the validity and safe delivery of national technical and vocational qualifications and assessments

Goal 3: Regulate for the validity and safe delivery of vocational and other regulated qualifications

Goal 4: Monitor and evaluate the validity of National Assessments

Goal 5: Promote innovation and an effective and efficient regulated qualifications market

Goal 6: Develop and manage our people, resources and systems

Welcome message from the Chief Regulator - Sally Collier.

Thank you for your interest in our roles at Ofqual.

This is an incredibly exciting time to join Ofqual as the qualifications landscape is going through a period of significant reform in line with government policy, and so you’ll have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping our future.

We’re a relatively small organisation – there are 200 people in our office in Coventry – but we punch above our weight.  We regulate over 18,000 qualifications and each year we oversee the award of more than 6 million GCSEs, AS and A levels.

Our work has a material impact on the lives of nearly every child in the country.  It requires technical expertise, and an astute awareness of the wider education and training system.

If we look like the kind of challenge you’re after, then I look forward to hearing from you.  I can promise you it will be challenging, engaging and rewarding!

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Ofqual (Coventry, England) in February 2013.

    Interview

Firstly there was a test, where you had to analyse some information, draw some conclusions, make a decision, and present findings to the panel of three people.

Following this there was a standard interview with the same panel. The interview lasted about 45 minutes, the test about 30 minutes.

The interview consisted of standard questions designed to measure competencies.
