If you want to innovate you've got to set your people free

By Steve Carden, PA technology innovation expert When we work with big companies, we see how they accumulate stuff like compulsive hoarders. They find it difficult to discard policies, processes and procedures. Like all compulsive disorders it's hard to shake off. But if you want your organisation to be innovative, that has to change.

PA Consulting Group – Why Work For Us?

PA is a consulting, technology and innovation firm. We define success as achieving exceptional results that have a lasting impact on businesses, communities and individuals worldwide. This principle has remained the cornerstone of our ethos since 1943 – and it continues to underpin everything we do. Our clients choose us because we challenge convention to find the solutions that really work – in practice, not just on paper. Then we roll up our sleeves and get the job done.

At PA we don’t just believe in making a difference.
We believe in making the difference.

Discover PA

PA has made the difference to our clients and communities worldwide for over 70 years.  It’s what drives us. And it’s a passion that we share with the Carlyle Group. Our partnership with Carlyle, one of the world’s most successful investors, is enabling us to build on what is great about our firm. Carlyle’s global reach, industry expertise and worldwide business connections provides us with a strong foundation for future success. We’re benefiting from the support of a globally respected organisation whilst retaining the culture, ethos, values and independence that make us unique. We continue to be powered by our people’s appetite for excellence. It’s what enables us to make the difference to businesses, governments and communities around the world.

Everything we work on at PA matters. We are one company with one goal – to make the world a better place through our bold, unconstrained thinking. With our history for successful innovation, we’re trusted with opportunities to transform, improve and even save lives. Our Work

To protect soldiers in Afghanistan, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) urgently needed a vehicle-based system to detect improvised explosive devices hidden below road surfaces. Off-the-shelf solutions existed but were considered unsatisfactory. Customising a solution, however, would extend the timescale and leave soldiers at risk for longer. PA resolved the MOD’s dilemma, meeting urgent timescales and finding a middle path between an off-the-shelf solution and a full development programme. It took just 11 months to move from investment decision to operational use. The system has been saving lives since early 2011. And the procurement approach saved an estimated £9 million of upfront costs plus projected lifetime costs of a further £8 million.

The way physicians care for patients is changing. Today, specialists are more likely to work in teams with other clinicians, rather than independently, to deliver the best care for patients. PA experts in the US joined CHEST for an intensive eight-week project to develop a new strategy to support these changes. We worked closely with CHEST leaders to refine their ideas, encourage innovative thinking and gain consensus around a structured set of recommendations. With PA’s support, CHEST has established a clear strategy for the future. It has also started on a journey to ensure that, in years to come, it will still be helping its members to provide the best possible care for the millions of people who suffer from pulmonary disease worldwide.

The Danish government is in the process of driving the largest rail investment in the country’s history, with the procurement of up to 275 state-of-the-art electric trains. Drawing on our team’s procurement, rolling stock and rail sector expertise, we conducted in-depth technical analyses over a 10-month period and prepared 10 technical reports that explored crucial aspects of the procurement including market state, maintenance requirements and programme execution. By providing deep technical insight and programme management expertise, our people helped establish confidence in the Transport Ministry that they would be capable of carrying out the changes in a reliable and cost-effective way.

At our Cambridge Technology Centre, we’re pushing the boundaries of what technological innovation has to offer. These innovations aren’t dreamt up to just sit on the shelf either – our diverse team of passionate problem-solvers have the capabilities to see a project through, all under one roof. Few projects truly showcase our end-to-end processes quite like our work with Ora kitchen towels.

Innovative, environmentally friendly and more efficient than any other towel on the market, the development of this revolutionary consumer product was driven by our TI experts from the very start. Bringing together expertise across packaging, new product development and manufacturing meant PA could deliver from concept to launch within 12 months – including the creation of a completely new manufacturing process. The combination of a great concept, a great team and ultimately a great product has resulted in almost 60% of consumers’ surveyed saying they would switch brands and buy Ora. The towel is currently available in selected UK Tesco stores.

There really has never been a better time to join us. Our recent partnership with the Carlyle Group has meant we’ve experienced a new period of exciting growth, with our portfolio of clients introducing even more inspiring opportunities in new and emerging markets. We’re looking further ahead than ever before – and that makes it a fantastic place to launch any career. For graduates, interns, industrial placement students and those at school looking for work experience, it’s a chance to provide a fresh take on our business and be part of the team that continues our legacy. It’s a clear career path supported by excellent training, with real responsibility early on and rapid progression for high performers – giving you the perfect platform to achieve brilliant things.

A very collaborative company with a "high energy low ego" ethos. Has a great open-plan office and quite a flat structure. Development is available for staff. Carlyle investment has been quite positive too, adding an extra sales-focus to the mix. Good opportunities to work from home - employees are trusted to get the job done.

Whilst there has been some work on improving Diversity and Inclusion, more needs to be done - there needs to be more emphasis on it.

    Advice to Management

Continue to build on some of the good D&I work that others are doing within the firm. Emphasise it's importance and encourage participation.
