Santander – Why Work With Us?

Helping our customers at the moments that matter most.

Santander UK is a large retail and commercial bank based in the UK and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the major global bank Banco Santander.

Our purpose is to help people and businesses prosper.

We aim to be the best open financial services platform by acting responsibly and earning the lasting loyalty of our people, customers, shareholders and communities. Customer loyalty remains at the core of our strategy, while we transform the bank for improved returns.

We do things with a culture that is Simple, Personal and Fair.

Santander at a glance

We are a large customer–focussed bank, and the UK’s leading full-service scale challenger. We have established presence in the mortgage and savings market and are successfully challenging the big four UK banks in current accounts and corporate and commercial banking.

Our business model

We are a relatively straightforward bank that creates value by serving our customer with financial products and services. Most if our 14 million customers are individuals but we also serve growing numbers of small, medium and large UK companies.

Most of what we do can be described as lending money to borrowers, taking deposits from savers, providing bank accounts and payment services. We also offer a wide range of investment and insurance products to households and other more specialised services and products to companies.

We help millions of people prosper and realise their dreams

  • 196 thousand employees in the Group
  • 40 training hours per employee throughout the year
  • 102 million euros for our employees development
  • 140 thousand volunteering hours
  • 46 million euros for social programmes and projects

The Santander Effect

Our work touches 140 million lives every day. How? By always innovating, sharing our experiences, questioning how we do things and adapting to new challenges.

As we keep reinventing ourselves for the digital age, you’ll find that with us, even your smallest action will have a massive impact.

That’s the Santander Effect.

Where do you want to make an impact?

You’ll find inspirational people and dynamic technologies at the heart of our changing business. From data scientists to cybersecurity experts, customer service advisors to UX specialists.

You’ll collaborate with – and learn from – a variety of brilliant people, in an exciting environment that encourages curiosity, creativity and innovative ideas.

Culture

Our culture — The Santander Way — is aligned with our corporate strategy. It encompasses our purpose, our aim and our ways of working. It is the cornerstone of our bank – a responsible bank.

Simple, Personal and Fair is how we work and that is the behaviour expected of our corporate culture.

Simple - We offer customers an accessible service with simple products that are easy to understand. We use simple language and improve our processes every day.

Personal - We provide our customers with a personalised service, offering them the products and services best suited to their needs. We want each and every one of our employees and customers to feel valued and treated as an individual.

Fair - We treat our employees and customers fairly and equally, we are transparent and we keep our promises. We create good relationships with different stakeholders because we understand that what is good for them is also good for Santander.

Our culture encompasses eight corporate behaviours. These behaviours are the hallmark of our culture and are meant to guide how we work and how we live the Santander brand.

  • Show respect
  • Truly listen
  • Talk straight
  • Keep promises
  • Actively collaborate
  • Bring passion
  • Support people
  • Embrace change

WHAT WE DO FOR OUR PEOPLE

Inclusion and diversity

We believe in equality of opportunity in all areas of employment and business, where selection and promotion is based on the relevant aptitudes and abilities to do the job. Learn more here

Santander UK is a member of a number of diversity partnership programmes including:

  • Employers' Forum on Age
  • Employers' Forum on Disability
  • Opportunity Now
  • Race for Opportunity
  • Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme.

Gender Pay Gap Reporting

We are committed to creating a culture that values and champions diversity, and creates equality of opportunity for all. This is a commitment that starts at the very top of our organisation and flows throughout it.

The gender pay gap takes into account all roles at all levels of the organisation, rather than comparing pay received by women and men performing the same roles. We regularly review and analyse our employee pay to ensure men and women are treated equally when performing the same role. We are, therefore, confident that we do not have an equal pay issue at Santander UK.

Working with our unions

We have a long history of trade union recognition governed by:

  • a partnership agreement with Advance - the independent trade union recognised in the former Abbey and Bradford & Bingley parts of the business
  • recognition agreements with the Communication Workers Union - recognised in the former Alliance & Leicester parts of the business

Both unions are affiliated to the Trade Union Congress.

Health and safety

Helping to look after our employees' health has mutual benefits to the individual employee and to the business.

All managers and employees have access to guidelines, standards and procedures they need to manage safety effectively through our Health and Safety Management System.

We promote physical and mental wellbeing through:

  • a quarterly health and lifestyle newsletter
  • an Employee Assistance Programme that offers a free, confidential, 24/7 helpline
  • face-to-face counselling

Flexiworking

We offer flexible working conditions by adapting working conditions to the personal needs and preferences of our employees so they can achieve a work-life balance that  works for us both.

FlexiWorking affects where, when and how much people work and can take many forms. That’s why we support colleagues with formal and informal arrangements.

BeHealthy

The health of our people is the health of our company. Our global well-being programme, BeHealthy, aims to inspire our employees and their families to achieve a healthy and well-balanced life.

Our ambition is to become one of the healthiest companies in the world built on these pillars: physical and mental exercise, proper diet and work-life balance.

Volunteering

At Santander we know how important and rewarding is to give away what it has the greatest value for others, our time and knowledge to help people to prosper. Thanks to our corporate volunteering policy, employees are entitled to spend a certain number of working hours each month or year volunteering.

Some of our work areas are the pro-bono volunteering to help NGOs, the financial education in the communities and helping people in a situation of social vulnerability.

At Santander UK, we’re on an ambitious digital transformation mission that will change our bank. Talented people with diverse skills and backgrounds are essential to this. Our teams work in open, collaborative, innovative and engineering-centric environments to solve complex technical problems with creative solutions - while keeping the customer at the heart of everything we do.

With us you will have the opportunity to develop your technological skills while working on products that will help improve people's lives.

Architecture

Provide strategic thought-leadership and architectural expertise to maintain high tech service levels and align our technology priorities with business strategy.

Cloud

Want to be part of a real Cloud transformation? Here you'll participate in the definition, development and execution of our UK Cloud adoption strategy.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Santander in August 2016.

    Interview

In depth interview about my job history. Also some questions to test my customer service skills. And a quick finical and fraud check.

It was a 1 to 1 interview and was done within an hour. Interestingly it’s was on the call floor. So I can see how it would be daunting for someone who is a little nervous
