  • As we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women this International Women's Day we reflect on the work our Founder, Harry Gordon Selfridge, did to provide equal opportunities for women. Selfridges was a huge supporter of the suffragettes, we opened our first store in London just as the movement gained momentum in 1909. Harry focused much of his attention on women from all social classes. Our store was the first to have women’s toilets, permitting them to stay all day instead of having to go home. He even championed women’s suffrage at a time when they fought to win women the right to vote in Britain. He flew their flag above the shop, published ads in their newspapers, and carried items in their colours. Today, Selfridges continues to support causes it believes in today. #IWD2018 #PressForProgress

Selfridges – Why Work For Us?

In 1906, Harry Gordon Selfridge arrived in London from Chicago with his heart set on opening his dream store. With his revolutionary understanding of publicity and the theatre of retail, Selfridges flourished under the direction of its charismatic Chief. Harry Gordon Selfridge's spirit of innovation and creativity lives on through its owners today.

Since 2003, W. Galen Weston and his family have owned and operated the business. The only store to be named the Best Department Store in the World three times, Selfridges today is more than just the sum of its products - it's a shopping experience that promises to surprise, amaze and amuse its customers by delivering extraordinary customer experiences. And, to this day, as Harry Gordon Selfridge said, 'Everyone is welcome'.

Our vision is to be the destination for the most extraordinary customer experience, and our people are central to achieving this. Team members across our business maintain our vision through the values we live day-to-day and the unique Selfridges spirit we bring to every project. Just as we create an extraordinary experience for our customers, we are dedicated to making Selfridges an exciting, inspiring and fun place to work. Being part of the Selfridges community offers many opportunities and unique experiences. As Harry Gordon Selfridge once said, ‘There’s no fun like work!’

At Selfridges we can offer you a rewarding and supportive environment to develop your career. We want you to have the most enriching experience which will allow you to fully immerse yourself in your role. As well as providing a great induction programme and on-the-job training, you can also take advantage of a wide variety of training, workshops and programmes, designed to help you develop your particular service, enhance your technical knowledge or management skills.

We operate an open and inclusive culture which encourages colleagues from across our business to share ideas on how we can continue to lead and improve. To achieve this, we engage a network of extraordinary communities to represent our team members. Our Values Ambassadors continually strive to explore ways to inspire us to live our values across every part of the business. Our Values Leadership Group are responsible for working together to strengthen our culture and drive our values forward.

GETTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE, IN THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME, IS VITAL TO OUR SUCCESS.

At Selfridges, ensuring an extraordinary customer experience across every facet of our business is at the core of our vision. That’s why, in every department and at every level, we look for people who combine talent and expertise with passion and enthusiasm for their role.

Just like the teams within our stores, our head office departments bring together people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and ages. And from our buying managers to our digital designers, there are some distinctive personal qualities that make a great Selfridges team member.

What we look for are people who will live the Selfridges values in everything they do. That means that as well as being friendly, helpful and professional, you’ll also be positive, energetic and adaptable. You will take responsibility to see through things through and will care passionately about doing them well.

    Pros

Good pay, very nice working environment

    Cons

Floor 2 staff very rude, especially mangers. Was covering a shift for a pop up during Christmas time and everyone was so rude demotivating.

    Advice to Management

More training days, Many of my co-workers didn't understand how to use the till properly. Cashing up, refunds, exchanges etc.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Selfridges (London, England).

    Interview

Have to prepare a presentation and present in front of potential candidates, then spend an hour on the shop floor. Very simple, they didn't ask us any questions based on experience as you are expected to explain all in your interview.

    • They didn't, the whole interview is based on your presentation and time on shop floor   2 Answers
