Best Places to Interview: 2017 (#48)
This year, we decided to bring the Selfridges Strategy to life for our team members and brand partners like never before, surprising, amazing and amusing them with an immersive multimedia exhibition called Open House. The 40 minute experience includes audio prompts, a map, tour guide and nine themed 'rooms', each bringing a different element of our business strategy to life. Feedback has been really positive so far and with it running over three weeks, it means we can reach more of our people than ever before and inspire them with our plans for 2019!

In 1906, Harry Gordon Selfridge arrived in London from Chicago with his heart set on opening his dream store. With his revolutionary understanding of publicity and the theatre of retail, Selfridges flourished under the direction of its charismatic Chief. Harry Gordon Selfridge's spirit of innovation and creativity lives on through its owners today.
Since 2003, W. Galen Weston and his family have owned and operated the business. The only store to be named the Best Department Store in the World three times, Selfridges today is more than just the sum of its products - it's a shopping experience that promises to surprise, amaze and amuse its customers by delivering extraordinary customer experiences. And, to this day, as Harry Gordon Selfridge said, 'Everyone is welcome'.

GETTING THE RIGHT PEOPLE, IN THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME, IS VITAL TO OUR SUCCESS.
At Selfridges, ensuring an extraordinary customer experience across every facet of our business is at the core of our vision. That’s why, in every department and at every level, we look for people who combine talent and expertise with passion and enthusiasm for their role.
Just like the teams within our stores, our head office departments bring together people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and ages. And from our buying managers to our digital designers, there are some distinctive personal qualities that make a great Selfridges team member.
What we look for are people who will live the Selfridges values in everything they do. That means that as well as being friendly, helpful and professional, you’ll also be positive, energetic and adaptable. You will take responsibility to see through things through and will care passionately about doing them well.
I have been working at Selfridges full-time (More than a year)
I moved over from one of our group businesses last year and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. You get full ownership and accountability of your work, you work with fun, creative, likeminded people and the discount is AMAZING. As is the holiday allowance. The benefits for staff are brilliant here - flexible working, great charity initiatives and fundraising things to get involved in.
No cons that I can think of, it's a great place to work
Advice to Management
Not really no.
I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Selfridges (London, England).
Online application was quick and easy, was contacted within a few days via email asking me to do a video interview, this was very easy with some great questions like "apart from your Christmas jumper what sets you apart from your friends" and "can you name all the gifts in the 12 days of Christmas". This was relaxed and something to have fun with to let your personality shine. I was contacted within a few days inviting me to a group interview in store, this was again a great experience with amazing management who were incredibly friendly and made the environment very relaxed and positive. The interview consisted of telling "my stories" in turns then a scenario based activity. My story is something they ask you to bring with you so that you can talk about yourself and how you are a good candidate for a Christmas role. The scenarios were also very relaxed and easy, we were separated into smaller groups and given a scenario to prepare a solution to, it's important to talk about things like link selling and how you will make the customers experience magical. I wasn't even asked any questions like why I want to work selfridges during the interview, but it's important you answer any questions like that within your my story so that they don't need to ask.Overall it was an incredibly positive interview process where management mainly focus on employing out going chatty people, skills seem to be less important than personality.
