Mission: We're on a mission to make Betting & Gaming Better and build the UK's Best Digital Business.
Here at SBG, every new starter in Tech gets a £1000 Tech Ninja Fund to spend on their own development. Our Agile Product Manager, Sean, chose to spend his attending hashtag#websummit last week in Lisbon!
Our Tech Edge Lightning talks have given us the chance to engage more with our local tech community and share ways of working. Here's the highlights from our last talk where we talked AI, Chatbots, Kubernetes, and AWS.

We're a tech company born out of Sky. We’re aiming to be the UK’s best digital business. And we do things the SBG Way.
1400+ colleagues, developing some of the country’s biggest brands in online betting and gaming including SkyBet, SkyVegas, Soccer Saturday Super6 and Sky Sports Fantasy Football.
Constantly innovating we’ve doubled in size over the last 5 years. And we’re not going to stop there. Here, you’ll grow. You’ll be challenged. You’ll be well rewarded. And our fast-track progression will meet your ambitions. Our laid-back culture has replaced suits and ties with casual dress, pool tables and arcade tournaments. We’ve created one of the most exciting environments in the business. It’s no wonder we’ve been named one of the UK’s best companies to work for.
It's been a really exciting journey. Check out our story here...
Here at Sky Betting and Gaming we're driven by a very clear vision: to make betting and gaming better. And we do this through our own unique way of working. Through behaviours that enable us to create brilliant customer experiences and make us one of the best companies to work for in the UK.
It's a bit like riding a bike. You never forget the experience, and you can take your career down any road you like. Put simply, it's the way we roll...
The SBG Way is made up of six Core Ways, which are the behaviours we are all expected to show, day in day out, whatever our role...
Supporting our Core Ways are our seven Ways to Grow, which encourage us to develop our careers and act like leaders of our business.
At Sky Betting & Gaming, we don’t have teams. We have Tribes. Tribes of people who work collaboratively with a shared purpose. Each Tribe is made up of small, agile and autonomous squads. And while each Tribe has a different goal, we’re all working towards one vision; to make betting and gaming better. Our Tribes also help us to tell a powerful and exciting story of what it’s like to work at Sky Betting & Gaming. Together with our Sky brand it's the way we work that makes us a distinctive place to work.
It’s an environment where startup culture, speed to market, agility and continuous improvement (from the game changer to the incremental) are powerful influences. It’s somewhere that values challenge and collaboration, while removing barriers and hierarchy. And it’s driven by an ethos that helps everyone feel like they’re part of something much bigger than their own role.
Being part of a Tribe means being part of a diverse and vibrant mix of people. People who make decisions together, quickly. Individuals flourish here; opinion is encouraged and everyone in the Tribe can make a big personal contribution. Above all else, we focus on doing the right thing for our customers, and on creating brilliant experiences.
It all means that we’ve created the kind of workplace that not only retains talent, but wins awards for it too - including a place on the prestigious Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list.
The bottom line is that all of our Tribes are committed to achieving our mission of Making Betting and Gaming Better, and to delivering on our ambition to be the UK’s best digital business.
We’re passionate about developing our people to be the best they can be. In fact, we have some of the most talented technologists in the country so it’s vital we keep up our game.
That’s why our Learning and Development team offers tonnes of opportunities for tech and non-tech people to learn new and exciting things to develop you in your role - and beyond.
Ever fancied learning to speak Italian? Or want a personal coach or free access to the most in demand tech-skills? It’s all part of the package here at Sky Betting and Gaming.
There are over 40 internally led training courses run by our own experts to choose from, as well as plenty of external opportunities too. Here’s what we’ve offered our colleagues this year:
It all means we’ve spent over a million pounds on just 1,200 colleagues in 2017/18 alone.
And on top of all of that, if you’re interested in something we haven’t delivered in the past, just ask us - we’re always ready to explore what’s out there to help others learn.
Here at Sky Betting and Gaming, we’ve all got different daily schedules. Different career needs. Different ambitions. And different plans for the future. But what connects us all is our passion for greenfield tech – and the opportunity to drive it forward in a working environment without boundaries.
It’s called working our way. But it’s really about doing things your way, and it offers the flexibility to mix your work with your other commitments (or even to join us with limited experience) and build a tech-focused career that you can take wherever you like.
Here, you’ll push new tech to its limits as you help us deliver resilient, scalable, high performing systems. You’ll work with the industry’s best digital minds as you create innovative products and applications. And you’ll develop systems and software that can handle huge challenges - like 11m financial transactions on a Saturday afternoon.
We’re looking for experience in everything from MongoDB, MySQL, and SQL to React, Node, Kotlin, Kubernetes, Java8, Scala, Akka, Clojure, Chef, Grafana and Splunk. We want expertise in high traffic/availability websites and in scaling event driven architecture. And we need people who can get to grips with a range of tools like LAMP stacks, AWS, Fortigate firewalls, F5 loadbalancers, Icinga, Grafana, Graphite, NewRelic, Redis, kafka, RabbitMQ and more.
But equally, we’re looking for people who are taking the first steps in their tech careers. People who can think big, and act bold in a lively, family-feel working environment that’s supportive, respectful, collaborative, and most of all fun. People who can thrive in a culture that nurtures talent, listens to its people, and trusts them to get on with the job.
People who can work our way.

Our Way means a working life like you've never experienced before. We’ve built a workplace that inspires amazing people to create brilliant experiences – not just for our customers but for our people, too. Here’s what #sbglife is all about…
Here at SBG, we don’t have conferences, we have Festivals. “The Gathering” brought together our people to learn more about future opportunities, where we are investing, and our culture and people. Check out the video below...
Our rewards are as unique as our culture. And you can tailor them to your needs. We want to attract the best people and keep hold of them. So, you can look forward to all of these things and more:
I have been working at Sky Betting & Gaming full-time (Less than a year)
One of the best things about working at SBG is the culture; it is very laid back with casual dress, flexible working hours and we are very social. The flexible working hours mean my work/life balance is better than it has ever been by far as it allows me to avoid a longer commute at rush hour. I love how social the business is too - we have regular social events as a team and also have bigger company-wide events like the races, charity ball and the gathering.
SBG also has a great benefits package which includes a free gym membership at a gym across the road. This means I can exercise on my lunch break and therefore have more time to relax at home in the evening.
Finally, SBG have really good opportunities for growth and personal development. Hard work is recognised and rewarded and there are loads of opportunities to learn new things.
There really aren't many downsides to working at SBG, although sometimes it feels like tech employees get preferential treatment over non-techies! For example the extra benefits they are entitled to.
Advice to Management
Don't change much! Be aware of preserving our culture as we continue to grow and ensure everyone is treated fairly.
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Sky Betting & Gaming (Sheffield, England) in March 2015.
One hour interview with tech lead and engineering manager, following phone screening by a recruitment agency. Talked through my CV, the (greenfield) project I was being hired for, and some agile/cultural and tech questions.
