Best Places to Work: 2018 (#17)
Our Head of Tech, Beth, let us know about her career journey to date and the great roles she's enjoyed here in the heart of the Yorkshire tech economy http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQuWr
Another busy week at Sky Bet towers.
There was the #YPbiz awards last night where we picked up 3 gongs, the inaugural @QueerCodeYorks and a Halloween Bake Off (naturally).
If you want to be part of the growing Sky Betting & Gaming family, and get involved in all of this or have the opportunity to create an event or initiative you’ve been wanting to do for ages, we’ve got plenty of inspiring opportunities. 215 of them to be exact.
Who We Are
We're a tech company born out of Sky, and we’re aiming to be the UK’s best digital business. 1000+ colleagues, developing some of the country’s biggest brands in online betting and gaming including SkyBet, SkyVegas, Soccer Saturday Super6 and Sky Sports Fantasy Football.
Constantly innovating we’ve doubled in size over the last 5 years. And we’re not going to stop there. Here, you’ll grow. You’ll be challenged. You’ll be well rewarded. And our fast-track progression will meet your ambitions. Our laid-back culture has replaced suits and ties with casual dress, pool tables and arcade tournaments. We’ve created one of the most exciting environments in the business. It’s no wonder we’ve been named one of the UK’s best companies to work for.
Smart grads. Big thinkers. Game changers. We’re the Tribe who makes sure that our early joiners develop careers that are guaranteed to take flight, whatever direction they choose. It’s all about building our next generation of future leaders via internships, graduate programmes and at our Software Academy.
Tech. Commercial. Finance. HR. Operations. Trading. Risk. Whatever your ambitions, you’ll accelerate your career, learn at pace and make a big impact working on real-life projects. We can offer you a world of new tech, great perks, fast growth, brilliant prospects and all kinds of career possibilities. Are you in?
At Sky Betting & Gaming, we don’t have teams. We have Tribes. Tribes of people who work collaboratively with a shared purpose. Each Tribe is made up of small, agile and autonomous squads. And while each Tribe has a different goal, we’re all working towards one common tribal vision. Our Tribes also help us to tell a powerful and exciting story of what it’s like to work at Sky Betting & Gaming. Together with our Sky brand it's the way we work that makes us a distinctive place to work.
It’s an environment where startup culture, speed to market, agility and continuous improvement (from the game changer to the incremental) are powerful influences. It’s somewhere that values challenge and collaboration, while removing barriers and hierarchy. And it’s driven by an ethos that helps everyone feel like they’re part of something much bigger than their own role.
Being part of a Tribe means being part of a diverse and vibrant mix of people. People who make decisions together, quickly. Individuals flourish here; opinion is encouraged and everyone in the Tribe can make a big personal contribution. Above all else, we focus on doing the right thing for our customers, and on creating brilliant experiences.
It all means that we’ve created the kind of workplace that not only retains talent, but wins awards for it too - including a place on the prestigious Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list.
The bottom line is that all of our Tribes are committed to achieving our mission of Making Betting and Gaming Better, and to delivering on our ambition to be the UK’s best digital business.
And because each Tribe shares the same common goals, in reality we’re all part of the master tribe: Tribe SBG. Which is something that everyone should experience at least once in their career.
We aim to be the UK’s best digital business. Constantly innovating, we’ve doubled in size over the last 5 years and created a place with no boundaries.
You’ll grow. You’ll be challenged. You’ll be well rewarded. You’ll work with 1000 amazing colleagues in an open, fun and fast-paced environment. You bet it sounds exciting.
Passionate about our products, we act with integrity, take ownership of our work and learn all the time. Better together - trust & collaboration are at the heart of everything we do.
We think big and act bold to change the game and make betting and gaming better. We’ve the courage to challenge and push the boundaries to exceed expectations.
We push ourselves to make life better for our customers. Providing brilliant experiences, we anticipate changing needs and deliver what they want even before they know it.
Discover an environment with no boundaries. Our business runs at scale and pace, we’re growing bigger and getting faster by the day, and there are no boundaries to what we can achieve. Our engineering based Tribes are focused on meeting the complex challenges we face, and we’re relentless in our quest to get the best people on board.

Advice to Management
Keep spending on the best people and best equipment/technology solutions and it will keep us competitive.
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Sky Betting & Gaming (Sheffield, England) in March 2015.
One hour interview with tech lead and engineering manager, following phone screening by a recruitment agency. Talked through my CV, the (greenfield) project I was being hired for, and some agile/cultural and tech questions.
