Ten things I learned from ILM about 'The Last Jedi's' space battles

Space battles are synonymous with Star Wars films. The original trilogy is fondly remembered for ILM's use of motion control and miniatures. These days, like on The Last Jedi, digital ship models, photorealistic rendering and simulated crashes and explosions are of course the norm. THE THIRD FLOOR Visualization – Why Work For Us?

The Third Floor has been certified as a great workplace by the independent analysts at Great Place to Work®. TTF earned this credential based on extensive ratings provided by its employees in anonymous surveys. Check out how our employees rated us here: TTF Great Places to Work Review

Our mission is to nurture an artistic community that strengthens stories and ideas through collaborative visualization.

We are the world’s leading visualization studio.

We use the virtual world to imagine, plan and problem solve for stories in film, television, games, VR and themed attractions.

We started out in 2004 with a handful of dedicated artists.

Now we’ve grown into a global company, partnering with our clients in locations like London, South Africa, Ireland, Australia and Canada.

We are a company of artists, for artists.

Our founders still work as artists, supervisors and creative directors on projects.

We are a community of award-winning talent.

We love helping the world’s leading creatives realize their vision.

Film & TV

We visualize your story at every stage of its creation.

From storyboards to post-production, we collaborate with you to explore your narrative, design shots and plan technical solutions.

Pitchvis

Before your project is even greenlit, you can test your concept with a custom-made previs trailer.

Our “pitchvis” trailers have been used to help greenlight Godzilla (2014), Men in Black 3, Jack the Giant Slayer, Oz: The Great and Powerful and others.

Storyboards & Animatics

To kick off the visualization process, our storyboard artists sketch story beats for each scene.

The editorial department cuts these shots into animatics for review.

Asset & World Building

Next we build the world your story lives in.

In Maya’s 3D virtual space, we generate each scene’s environment and elements.

Previs

With the assets in place, our artists animate the story and shots. The 3D visualization allows you to explore every action and angle. Previs is your sandbox and stress-test before you shoot.

Techvis

Once previs captures your vision, we run a technical analysis to see how the story can be physically shot.

Our workflow stores all technical information (lens type, camera distance, size of a greenscreen, speed of a vehicle) and produces blueprints for physical production.

Virtual Production

Our iterative, nonlinear virtual production workflow merges virtual environments and characters with your physical production.

We use imagery and 3D spatial data generated during previs to provide services such as virtual location scouting and on-set visualization.

Postvis

After production, we combine the previs elements with the live action photography to quickly preview the film before implementing final VFX.

Postvis provides a post-production blueprint for your VFX team and a comprehensive look at the film for test screenings.

Our company was started by artists – for artists.

Our goal is to create a collaborative and thriving environment where people can reach their greatest potential.

We cast each of our shows, matching artists with projects they are passionate about.

From VR, films, theme parks and more, we have a variety of projects where we can utilize your unique skills and interests.

Lunch and learns, guest speakers, training sessions, and scholarship opportunities are all the status quo around here to help you grow in your craft and your career.

We could run down the list of everything we offer like benefits, paid Parental Leave and a 401(k), but we think our perks best exemplify our company culture. Take a look and decide for yourself:

  • Monday breakfast
  • Wednesday Coffee- Starbucks or Coffee Bean?
  • Friday lunch
  • Fun Fridays:
Themed Friday events with drinks and apps every few weeks
  • Company events:
Summer Family Day Picnic and a rockin’ Holiday party
  • 2 weeks hiatus over the winter holidays
  • Crew screenings – enjoy watching the fruits of your labor in the TTF theater
  • Artist sponsored events:

I applied online. I interviewed at THE THIRD FLOOR Visualization (Los Angeles, CA (US)).

    Interview

The interview should have been my first clue. It was a honey-pot full of promises. It sounded too good to be true and it is!
If you are a professional and value your career path. Do NOT accept an offer from The Third Floor Visualization.

    Interview Questions

    • How much money do you want..? Was pretty much it, they didn't care about the person they were interviewing at all. Or my goals or career path. They were only interested in what concerned them.   1 Answer
