There is a shortage of housing across the UK and Taylor Wimpey are committed to supporting the Government Plans to build more homes.  To ensure that we stay ahead of demand, we have started to address the skills shortage in our sector and build our future pipeline of talent.


All our Apprentice, Management Trainee and Graduate schemes offer a structured career pathway into our business.  

In addition to formal learning conducted either at college or in one of our site-based, purpose-built learning rooms, you will develop trade skills by working closely with one of our master craftsmen. This will give you the ability to “earn whilst you learn”.


Direct Trade and Apprentice Scheme 


  • Trade apprenticeships last between 2 to 3 years in England and 4 years in Scotland

  • Majority of time is spent working with the production teams on site

  • You will be supported by a mentor while working with experienced trades people

  • You will gain formal qualifications through either a day or block release programme


Management Trainee Scheme 

Our Management Trainee Programme offers a structured development path into one of 5 core roles (Civil Engineer Trainee, Quantity Surveyor Trainee, Site Manager, Design and Planning and Buyer Trainee). Our Management Trainees are mainly office based and sit across the more technical business unit disciplines such as Commercial, Technical and Planning.This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of our 24 business units across the UK and learn directly from our teams of specialists and business leaders.


Graduate Schemes

Designed to create the future leaders within our business we run several different Graduate Programmes depending on skill set and where your area of study fits within our business. Our general programme is a 2-year rotational scheme divided into 4 separate 6 month placements, where you will spend time in all areas of the Taylor Wimpey business including; production, commercial, technical, sales and marketing, customer service, land and finance. However, we also focus on specific disciplines such as Finance and Planning.

As well as functional breadth we also recognise the importance of diverse geographical exposure as our business units have some subtle but important differences in the way they operate. This will depend on things like the local community, economy and customer base. As part of the rotations our graduates gain experience working in different markets, regions and even different house types.

Leonard Cheshire Disability’s ‘Change 100’ programme

We’ve supported Leonard Cheshire Disability’s ‘Change 100’ programme since 2015 by offering summer work placements, across a variety of roles, to undergraduates with a disability. The programme also serves as a great opportunity for the leaders in our business to understand more about how to accommodate a range of abilities in the workplace.


RIBA #SeeMeJoinMe campaign

We are proud to support the Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) #SeeMeJoinMe campaign which celebrates and supports a more diverse and inclusive construction industry. We’re keen to show girls, parents and teachers that working in the construction industry is not off-limits to women. We’ve also participated in Women in Sustainable Construction groups.

We have some fantastic female leadership role models, including Ingrid Osborne. Ingrid started her career as a graduate at Taylor Wimpey and progressed to Divisional Chairman for our London and South East business. Ingrid was recently also named in the Cranfield School of Management’s 100 Women to watch.

Trade and Site Based Careers

Taylor Wimpey is committed to attracting talent and developing skilled tradespeople. In 2018 we launched an internal initiative to hire more trade roles so we have a blend of sub-contractor and direct employees working on site. This enables us to not only maintain a more balanced workforce on site but also helps to identify, develop and retain our site based talent. We see our Direct Trade talent pool as future potential for site managers and other senior trade roles. We also offer paid apprenticeships across carpentry, bricklaying, painting and decorating, roofing and scaffolding. Our apprenticeships are designed to give you the right balance between classroom learning and hands on experience ensuring you are best placed to be offered a permanent opportunity following your studies. Depending on the trade you opt for and your level of experience, an apprenticeship with Taylor Wimpey should be completed in 3-5 years and you would formally qualify with a level 2 or level 3 diploma in a construction related discipline. 

Talented apprentices are the future of our production business and we are investing in relationships across the country with schools and colleges. We are the key sponsor for Buckinghamshire University Technical College Aylesbury and are committed to taking an apprenticeship intake from the college each year into our local sites and business units.

    Positive Outlook

    I have been working at Taylor Wimpey full-time


    During the Covid-19 pandemic, the way Taylor Wimpey led the industry on closing sites, to opening sites and the fantastic communication in between (ie. commitment to employees, customers and sub-contractors) has all been outstanding. Whilst the company has always cared very much about Health & Safety, the work that it does, and how it treats it's employees and sub-contractors, the global pandemic required very strong leadership and Taylor Wimpey has an abundance of this! The company is not short on mottos too, but one which resonates with me is 'better tomorrow' as it shows the company's willingness to listen, learn and be better and also instils great energy and strong work ethic within it's employees. The company always seeks out the opinions of it's employees and shows that it cares very much about people generally, and the communities in which it operates. It is fair to say (and I'm not alone) that I feel very proud, and lucky, to be part of Taylor Wimpey.


    Decisions sometimes take a while to materialise in Taylor Wimpey, however this is mainly due to the large size of the company.

    I applied online. I interviewed at Taylor Wimpey.


    Online application - general form to fill out and send to the company
    Video interview - Do your research, they give you time to answer the questions and be yourself, make sure you know why you want to work for Taylor Wimpey and why you would suit the role.
    Assessment centre - you receive a phone call rather quickly if you have been successful, the assessment centre gives you a chance to meet Taylor Wimpey graduates and employees from head office etc. You get to ask questions and find out more, they reimburse you for any travel. Really friendly and welcoming, everyone gives you the opportunity to make yourself known and welcome. You will carry out group tasks, an individual presentation and short interview with a more senior members of the company. You also meet your recruiter who supports you during the process. After the assessment centre they provide you with feedback rather quickly and let you know if you have been successful.
    One to one interview with senior members - this process was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic. Credit to the company who still gave graduates a chance to become a part of the company, I was really pleased that they carried out teams interviews giving you the chance to discuss and meet Taylor Wimpey senior members. This process requires you to prepare a presentation in which you are provided a set of topics prior to the interview. You will then be asked a range of interview questions and questions about the presentation given. The interviewers make you feel comfortable and not pressured during the process, very friendly and welcoming.
    Offer - if you have been successful or not, you still get provided with feedback. If you have been successful you are told quickly, the recruiters are great at being communicative, in this case mine was Gemma, who is extremely friendly and supportive.
    Overall, the recruitment process is extremely welcoming and the culture of the company is what has made me accept the offer to join Taylor Wimpey!
