Toolstation – Why Work For Us?

Welcome to Toolstation

Join Toolstation and you’ll be joining one of the fastest-growing businesses in Europe. We’re one of Britain’s best-known multi-channel retailer of tools, accessories and building supplies. Backed by Travis Perkins plc, our freedom to operate as a nimble, entrepreneurial business means we’re now well established and have even bigger plans.

The trade, home improvers and self-builders all trust us to deliver a lot more than tools. So, our colleagues in our Head Office and Contact Centre in Bridgwater, at our Distribution Centres in Bridgwater, Middleton, Redditch and Daventry, and in our network of over 350 branches throughout the UK, work together to get the job done. And with plans to open another 60 branches this year, we always have opportunities for great retail professionals who want to grow with us.

Whatever your background, if you’ve got a can-do attitude, the confidence to take the initiative and an open mind to learning new skills, you’ll find your place here. Not to mention an open, friendly atmosphere that encourages you to be yourself.

The Toolstation way

Join us and you’ll find we do things a bit differently. How? Well, for a start, we’ll give you the space to think for yourself, learn from your mistakes and get things done.

No matter what area you join, you’ll be working with a bunch of friendly people who are always ready to help you out. And most of all, you’ll be joining a business where every team’s growing, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to build a rewarding career.

We understand our customers.

We’re inquisitive, we listen to understand, we share. We always look for ways to improve things for our customers.

We make it easy for customers to get the products they want, when and where they want them. So, it’s not about the hard sell. It’s about making them welcome, getting to know what they need and pointing them in the right direction.

We keep things simple.

We’re straightforward, we communicate clearly, and we don’t overcomplicate. We want to improve and move things forward.

We’re a down-to-earth business that makes life hassle-free. That means you’ll join a friendly, supportive team, where you’ll have the chance to learn new skills and simply be yourself.

We deliver the goods.

We work to understand the needs of the business and focus on the results. We’re prepared to fail, we don’t make excuses and never stand still.

It’s not just our customers who find what they’re looking for here. Join us and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and learn new ones.

We do the right thing by everybody.

We’re fair. We appreciate people’s differences and want to make sure everyone feels valued.

Whether you’re looking for a job or a long-term career, you’ll find it here, together with a fun work atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to learn new things.

We don't take ourselves too seriously.

We’re free to be ourselves. We have fun, work with a smile on our faces and understand that a good sense of humor will help us succeed.

Our focus might be on giving our customers the products they want, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun while we do it. So, whether we’re chatting to customers or supporting each other, we do it with a smile.

The Toolstation team

Working at Toolstation’s a totally different experience to working anywhere else, mostly because of the sheer speed we’re growing at. That’s behind everything that’s happening here – expanding our teams, looking at new ways of working and helping our people to build great careers. It makes for a positive, fun place to work.

We’re a down-to-earth, open and honest business, where there’s always someone around to help you out when you need it. And we don’t just support each other – we like to support the communities we live and work in, too. What’s more, we have fun while we do it, so to raise funds for the RNLI, our people have done everything from fancy dress days and sponsored bike rides to ice bucket challenges and forming choirs and bands.

It’s all part of being Toolstation – giving whatever you’re doing your best shot and enjoying yourself along the way.

What working here means to us

We want working here to make you feel proud. Proud of the company and proud of what you can achieve here. That’s why we asked our people what it meant to them to work at Toolstation. To find out what gets them out of bed each morning and coming to work in our stores, distribution centres, contact centre and head office with a smile on their faces.

They gave us lots of different answers, which can be summed up in four points:

•   We want to do our best for our people
•   Our future is full of opportunity
•   Our teams are positive and supportive
•   We encourage you to be yourself

To put it simply, the overall message they gave us about working here is:

Together, we’ll get the job done

Recruiting the very best

Our business is growing at an amazing pace, with on-going plans to open new stores across the UK. This means that, as well as finding the best people to staff these stores, we also need people in every business area to support this expansion.

With our strong training and development programmes, we’ll always look to promote from within to meet our business needs. This means we’re always looking for great people who want to start their career in our branches, distribution centres, contact centres and head office teams. But we’re growing so fast that we also need experienced people at every level.

But whatever level we recruit at, we’re always looking for a Toolstation kind of person. Someone with a real can-do attitude who gets on with people, wants to do their best and who’s always looking for a better way to do things. A quick learner and a positive thinker, who’s always puts the customer first, no matter what team they join. Most of all, someone who sees being here as more than just a job.

Where you could be working...

From branches to distribution centres, our contact centre to head office, you’ll find plenty of different job opportunities here. Find out more about where you might be working at www.toolstationjobs.com

I have been working at Toolstation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Toolstation has some of the best benefits of any retail employer out in the market today. They're also a solid fast paced retailer that offers job security in an ever flammable sector. Your voice is always appreciated and taken with serious vigour. For the right people, you will not find a better retail employer. We also have many different directions for advancement and recognised qualifications in retail. I have worked in retail and warehousing for 20 years and you would be hard to find a better employer

    Cons

Work life balance was an issue in the past but with a massive shift in direction, this has been addressed and we're no longer a minimum wage employer which was the only other draw back.

    Advice to Management

None as they're making all the right moves and pushing the company in the right direction.

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Toolstation (Barrow, England) in May 2017.

    Interview

Online application, followed by a interview in store with manager. Standard retail questions asked. A small maths test lasting around 20/25 mins. Small tour of the building and how the system works. Easy enough to pick up.
