This is the position in which TransferWise finds itself: now eight years old, with nine offices around the globe and a total head-count of more than 1,700, it's no longer a plucky upstart.

At TransferWise, we do things a bit differently. Our strategy doesn’t emerge from the top-down, with a corporate hierarchy and a small group of people making decisions on behalf of everyone.

Instead, it emerges from the collective brainpower of all our people, who are organised in dozens of independent, autonomous teams. Teams make their own decisions. They stay closest to our customers, so they choose what problems to solve and where to spend the most time. This means they can move fast and run multiple projects at the same time.

So how does this work?

Well, each team picks a problem they want to solve. This could be adding a new currency route,  implementing a price drop or even figuring out what skills we need to grow our business. Whatever the problem, our teams talk to our customers, study data, get creative and decide themselves how to work together to make it happen.

Teams always seek feedback and anyone can challenge a team on what they’re doing. So they must be able to explain how their focus benefits our customers.

We give a lot of trust to our teams and they need to be comfortable with that freedom. It’s not just about coming up with bold ideas, it’s about delivering them and being accountable for the outcome.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

We know working at TransferWise is challenging and all our people go above and beyond for our customers. Because of this, after 4 years at TransferWise, you’ll have the option to take a paid sabbatical -  6 weeks paid time off and £1,000 financial support in addition to your annual leave. This is intended to reward the time and effort that you’ve put into TransferWise and give you a long enough period to fully switch off and reflect back on your journey.

A home away from home

We’ve created office environments where people enjoy coming in and where everyone can do their best work. All our offices are pet-friendly and true to our Estonian roots, almost all our offices have a sauna! We also enjoy daily free breakfast and weekly team lunches and subsidise your activity club if you have a specific interest or hobby in mind.

Every year, we take all our employees on a paid company trip. The goal is to bring everyone together, have fun and celebrate our mission.Despite our rapid growth in size (we almost doubled our size from the year before), it’s truly important to maintain our founding culture and keep people as excited about our mission as they were when we launched.

Product Engineering Bootcamp

Lasting 3 months you can apply to join one of our engineering hubs in Tallinn, London, Budapest, Singapore or Cherkasy. You’ll join one of our teams as a developer and build real-world products that matter. There will be the opportunity to join us in a permanent role at the end of the internship.

    Colleagues are absolutely wonderful. There are so many smart and creative people together. I am inspired by them and what they do every day.
    If you are open to learning there are so many things to learn. You just need to see where you can help and do it. I enjoy choosing my own new challenges and working in an open and honest environment.
    I love it that even though I have been here for 5 years the company still feels like a startup to work in. We are just a bit better structured in many ways. The feeling is still there.


    While I enjoy autonomous teams and working this way, it is not for everyone. I would suggest thinking about this when applying for a job and trying to find out if this environment is one where you can thrive.
    There is a lot of information to learn and it may not be as straightforward as a new joiner may expect. We are definitely getting better at it and have made massive steps forward.

    I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at TransferWise (London, England) in December 2018.


    The interview process was competency, motivation and attribute based. This was well designed and thought out. This involved a video interview with the recruiter, a video interview with the lead, a presentation and a final in-person interview with the lead.
