Q&A with Diana, Global Head of Banking and Expansion at TransferWise - TransferWise Careers

My most interesting project has been our expansion into Brazil. It's a massive project and learning experience for me, with lots of ups and downs. It's such a different market in so many ways. But it was so interesting, understanding the regulatory environment, talking with partners and banks and learning from local customers.

  • At TransferWise, we call ourselves Wisers. And in 2019, we celebrated reaching 2,000 of us. But this year, we hope to celebrate 3,000 🚀 Could you be one of them? Find out more at transferwise.com/careers https://youtu.be/KHvGIpr2p-8

TransferWise – Why Work With Us?

Join a global tech company with a big mission and a startup heart

We’re 2,000 people, from 70+ nationalities, working in 13 cities around the world.

Our mission: money without borders

In the words of our founder, ‘people don’t join a company. They join a mission.’ And ours is big.

Current banking systems don’t let us send, spend or receive money across borders easily. Or quickly. Or cheaply.

So we’re building a new one.

Our mission is to make money without borders the new normal. For everyone. Getting there isn’t easy and we haven’t figured it all out yet. But together, we can do it.

Why join TransferWise?

We like to think we’re the perfect mix of big and small.

Big enough to solve problems for millions of customers but small and nimble enough to be growing at the speed of light. Big enough to flip an industry on its head, but still small enough to have a long way to go.

Our people are the most intelligent, curious people in the business and we’re big enough to attract them. But we’re still small enough for you to get close to our customers and have an impact on the problems we need to solve.

How we work

We work differently and we’re proud of it. Here you’ll have bucket loads of freedom, responsibility and autonomy.

That autonomy extends to your work-life balance too as our success lies in letting you shape your role to suit how you work best. We trust each other to get stuff done.

We work in autonomous teams.

Autonomous teams are central to the way we work. Our teams are closest to our customers, and are empowered to decide what to prioritise and deliver, without unnecessary bureaucracy. Working this way helps us move at speed and achieve our mission faster.

We put our customers first.

We’re working to create a fairer financial system for real people. So we make sure customer voices are the loudest in the room. Whether that’s working through feedback, inviting customers to test our product, or having them talk us through how we’re doing. We listen and we serve — no egos, no exceptions.

We get better through feedback.

Feedback is a good thing. Our teams get it early and they get it often. Anyone, in any team, can challenge anyone else’s ideas. You can even challenge the CEO. In fact, he’d welcome it. Our teams gain focus from working this way, it helps us move fast and recognise when we need to shift direction. And we all work hard to give genuine, direct, and respectful feedback to the teams around us.

We learn as we grow.

Our growth over the past few years has been fast. Very fast! Last year we almost doubled in size. Which means that half of our people have been with us less than a year.

Fast growth brings challenges and we have our growing pains. Teams are working on so many different things at once, it can be hard to keep up with everything that’s going on. But we listen to each other, get stuck in and do whatever it takes to make the best working environment we can for everyone.

Our offer

Yes, you’ll get the usual stuff like a laptop, holidays and a salary but we don’t just want to sell you a list of benefits. We’d like to explain a bit more about why we offer what we do.

Sharing our success

We offer everyone who works for us stock options as we’re building TransferWise together and want you to share in the success of our $3.5billion company on a mission. We’ve been profitable for 3 years now and we don’t plan on slowing down.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

We know working at TransferWise is challenging and all our people go above and beyond for our customers.

Because of this, after 4 years at TransferWise, you’ll have the option to take a paid sabbatical: 6 weeks paid time off and £1,000 financial support in addition to your annual leave.

Flexibility and trust

We positively encourage flexible working. Whether it’s time off for children, working from home, school plays, volunteering or just life admin – we know flexibility is essential.

Here success is measured by the impact you have, not the amount of time you spend in the office.

A home away from home

We create office environments that mean people enjoy coming in and where everyone can do their best work. All our offices are pet-friendly and true to our Estonian roots, almost all our offices have a sauna!

Work hard, play harder.

Every year, we take all our employees on a paid company trip. The goal is to bring everyone together, have fun and celebrate our mission.

We also offer:

  • Parental leave
  • Medical insurance plans
  • Free daily breakfast and weekly team lunches
  • Health and wellbeing discounts
  • Pension and retirement plans
  • Social events
  • Relocation support

We’re in this together.

We’re revolutionising an industry so it can be chaotic and challenging. Sometimes we fail, and that’s okay. It’s a great way to learn.

TransferWise is made up of people who care deeply about our mission, get stuff done, put customers first and work to avoid unnecessary drama.

Value #1. This isn’t just a job, we’re a revolution.

We’re making a positive, important change in the world.

We can’t do this hanging out in our comfort zones.

No-one can do this alone, we need each other.

Value #2. We get it done.

We break through walls to make amazing things happen.

We take ownership of what we do. This thing belongs to all of us.

We take care of ourselves and each other.

Value #3. Customers > Team > Ego

We’re working to create a better world for our customers - that’s the whole point.

Customer voices should always be the loudest. We listen to and serve them as a team.

Ego? Vanity? No. Stay humble.

Value #4. No drama. Good karma.

We start by assuming everyone has good intentions.

We respect each other’s worldviews and challenge arguments, not individuals.

We’re open and honest - no hidden agendas here.

Blog: How product engineers build new features at TransferWise

A structure as unique as our people

Here, every engineer is a product person. Instead of being boxed in, you’ll be free to work — within an independent, autonomous team. You’ll solve some of the most challenging problems across the full product lifecycle.

With that freedom comes responsibility. We’ll help you to grow, but there’s no set rules or guidelines — you’ll love to figure things out on your own.

That might sound scary, but everyone has a lead and collaborative team to support them. We know that shaping our future product is a big job and work-life balance is key to our success — so you’re free to shape your role to suit how you work best.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I've worked in at many companies, in many different industries. This is far and away the best place I've worked. We provide a legitimately helpful, beneficial service to our clients, with no downside to anyone. My colleagues are some of the most intelligent, dynamic, kind people I've ever met. The culture is open, inclusive, not rigid at all.

    Cons

Every medium-large company has a certain amount of bureaucracy. TransferWise is no different. But it has less of it than I've experienced before.

People who need a ton of structure — who need to be told what to do to do their job — might struggle here. Being a self-starter is rewarded.

Also there is not necessarily a steady, prescribed path to moving up. You move up if you do good work, but there's no formula (years + KPIs, for instance) that guarantees it. At least not that I've seen. I actually like that. I understand why some may not.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep doing what you're doing.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at TransferWise (New York, NY (US)) in August 2019.

    Interview

Applied online. The first interview was 45 minutes over Zoom. I was asked a relatively simple OOP design problem and the interviewer was very collaborative and easy-going so it went smoothly. I had to either use Java or Javascript. The good part is that they are more interested in seeing your thought process and don't worry about code compilation. I was also asked questions about my resume after. I quickly heard back and was next invited to a 90 min technical interview with two devs. Once again, the interview was collaborative (peer-programming style) and the interviewers were laid back. They asked two main questions: debugging and improving a java game and an sql subquery problem (which I fumbled on). They also asked questions about web security. I got rejected, but ended up getting very detailed feedback on what I should improve on.
