TransferWise – Why Work For Us?

Since 2011, we’ve had a clear mission: money without borders. Built by and for people who live global lives, we’re the fairest, easiest way to manage your money across borders.

We’re just at the beginning of our story and we’re growing at an incredible pace. We won’t stop until anyone, anywhere can send, spend and receive money wherever they are, whatever they’re doing. There’s still heaps to do and we can’t do it alone.

We’re not done yet

Today, customers have paid over £1 billion into their borderless accounts and are transferring more than £2 billion overseas every month with TransferWise, saving themselves £60 million every month. Yet we’re moving less than 1% of the world’s money. The scope of what we want to achieve and how much opportunity there is to grow is immense.

The same opportunity is true of a career here. There’s new problems to solve, challenges to overcome and opportunities to impact our customers every single day.

TransferWise Mission

Visit transferwise.com/careers to join us

At TransferWise, we do things a bit differently. Our strategy doesn’t emerge from the top-down, with a corporate hierarchy and a small group of people making decisions on behalf of everyone.

Instead, it emerges from the collective brainpower of all our people, who are organised in dozens of independent, autonomous teams. Teams make their own decisions. They stay closest to our customers, so they choose what problems to solve and where to spend the most time. This means they can move fast and run multiple projects at the same time.

So how does this work?

Well, each team picks a problem they want to solve. This could be adding a new currency route,  implementing a price drop or even figuring out what skills we need to grow our business. Whatever the problem, our teams talk to our customers, study data, get creative and decide themselves how to work together to make it happen.

Teams always seek feedback and anyone can challenge a team on what they’re doing. So they must be able to explain how their focus benefits our customers.

We hire smart people and we trust them

We give a lot of trust to our teams and they need to be comfortable with that freedom. It’s not just about coming up with bold ideas, it’s about delivering them and being accountable for the outcome.

With so many big, impactful projects to get your hands on and no complicated approvals or buy-in processes that take months, a career at TransferWise will give you radical levels of ownership and empowerment. Plus the opportunity to see the direct impact of your work on our customers.

Product Design and Autonomy at TransferWise

What it's like to be an engineer at TransferWise in the Budapest office

We know everyone needs a little something different to do their best work. That’s why we offer all our employees:

Sharing our success

One of the ways we attract mission-driven people to our organisation is by offering all our employees a competitive salary along with stock options. This is because we’re all creating TransferWise together and we want to share the value of our success as one of Europe’s fastest growing companies.

Flexibility and trust

When it comes to things like time off for children, working from home, school plays, volunteering and more, our belief in flexible working largely renders a ‘company policy’ irrelevant. We believe in a culture of trust and assess performance on impact, not how much time is spent in the office.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

We know working at TransferWise is challenging and all our people go above and beyond for our customers. Because of this, after 4 years at TransferWise, you’ll have the option to take a paid sabbatical -  6 weeks paid time off and £1,000 financial support in addition to your annual leave. This is intended to reward the time and effort that you’ve put into TransferWise and give you a long enough period to fully switch off and reflect back on your journey.

A home away from home

We’ve created office environments where people enjoy coming in and where everyone can do their best work. All our offices are pet-friendly and true to our Estonian roots, almost all our offices have a sauna! We also enjoy daily free breakfast and weekly team lunches and subsidise your activity club if you have a specific interest or hobby in mind.

Work hard, play harder.

Every year, we take all our employees on a paid company trip. The goal is to bring everyone together, have fun and celebrate our mission.Despite our rapid growth in size (we almost doubled our size from the year before), it’s truly important to maintain our founding culture and keep people as excited about our mission as they were when we launched.

TransferWise is made of people who care deeply about our mission, get stuff done, put customers first and work to avoid unnecessary drama.

We’re revolutionising an industry. It can be chaotic and challenging. Change is constant. Sometimes we fail, and that’s okay. It’s a great way to learn.

Read about why we’re here, how we act and how we work in our Culture compass guide for new joiners.

Value #1. This isn’t just a job, we’re a revolution.

We’re making a positive, important change in the world.

We can’t do this hanging out in our comfort zones.

No-one can do this alone, we need each other.

Value #2. We get it done.

We break through walls to make amazing things happen.

We take ownership of what we do. This thing belongs to all of us.

We take care of ourselves and each other.

Value #3. Customers > Team > Ego

We’re working to create a better world for our customers - that’s the whole point.

Customer voices should always be the loudest. We listen to and serve them as a team.

Ego? Vanity? No. Stay humble.

Value #4. No drama. Good karma.

We start by assuming everyone has good intentions.

We respect each other’s worldviews and challenge arguments, not individuals.

We’re open and honest - no hidden agendas here.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The reason I joined was that the mission resonated. I was fed up with banks charging me high fees and the transaction taking up to 5 days. We really are focused on this mission and we have great values that underpin this. I love the autonomy teams have and the forward thinking 'problem solving' mindset. There are lots of great perks... An all company paid trip, healthcare, local discounts, gym, yoga, and lunches to name a few. But, the flexibility and immediate trust is what i like the most.

    Cons

I can't think of any at this stage.

    Advice to Management

    Keep focused on autonomous teams

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at TransferWise (London, England) in August 2015.

    Interview

Briefly described my experience and had an OO task on a whiteboard. After that had a chat about software development and company practices. Everything was very nice, had a chance to discuss functional programming and discuss company culture. Overall a very good experience. The only bad thing is that I needed to wait for another couple of weeks for results.
