    Advice to Management

When I first started at UWM (a year ago) I didn't want to believe the negative reviews. We were told during training that those bad reviews were from disgruntled former/current employees. I am not disgruntled nor do I harbor bad feelings against the company. I merely want to share my experience.
I'll first say that the training is phenomenal! The people and perks are great too. My only issue was the leadership. I wish UWM would invest more time setting up the Team Leads for success. I think there should be stricter qualifications as well as vetting. Once someone is in the role they should be required to go through mentoring just like the Underwriters. Some of the TLs are very young and have no idea how to lead nor have they been given the tools to succeed. So many have stepped down or have left because they weren't set up for success. Also, please stop forcing people to go into Senior Underwriter class. I expressed to my TL on 2 different occasions that I felt I wasn't ready. I was just becoming confident in my current role and was content. They didn't listen. I came into work on a Friday to an email saying I'll be in senior class on Monday.
Being a Senior Underwriter is tough. Several of my classmates were ready to quit. One of us cried at least once a day. Most of us questioned our ability to do the job mainly because; while we were book smart, we had no idea what to expect once on our own. We had no idea the pressure would be so intense. We had no idea that we would be micro managed. We had no idea we would never work a 40 hour week again. I put in 50+ hours a week and at times I would work 12 hours days. It's the phone calls, the client requests, the quizzes, the senior queues. Then to top it all off the brokers are submitting the majority of their docs at initial leaving the senior to underwrite the entire file minus a payoff or appraisal. So not only do we get calls on senior stuff we also have to handle underwriter II stuff. Having a commitment of 5 a day doesn't seem like a lot on paper. However, once you add in all the calls, queues and CRs youll find yourself burnt out pretty fast.
The other issue I had was the high school mentality and lack of professionalism. It's too clicky. They shuffle people around around based upon who is liked/disliked. It's bad enough that your job is stressful but then add gossip and caddiness to the mix and it becomes a recipe for disaster.
Otherwise I did enjoy my time there and wish nothing but the best for the company.
