I worked at University of Nottingham full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. A lack of formal training encourages you to use your own initiative when dealing with dangerous or unpredictable situations
    2. Being dressed like a police officer allows you to encounter what being a police officer is actually like on a daily basis, which improves your empathy for them no end
    3. Writing every report by hand gives you a chance to brush up on your calligraphy skills
    4. The apparent nepotism within security is a fantastic way to get to know your boss's extended family and friends
    5. Not having a master key for each building means you end up carrying 50+ keys per area on huge steel chains, which is great for both muscular and cardiovascular fitness
    6. Being called out to deal with leaks, power failures, light-bulb changes or broken locks at the various on-site residences allows you to improve your amateur DIY skills in super quick time
    7. Being used as a "gofer" to fetch the security team admin workers more coffee, printing paper and pens is a good opportunity to practice resilience and improve your stress management
    8. Not being allowed to use the 500+ camera CCTV system means you don't get wrapped up in technical issues or red tape, leaving you more time to do focus on conducting essential foot patrols, come rain or shine
    9. Working 7 night shifts in a row means you get to spend more time resting when you're at home
    10. The minimal areas where you can spend your 45-minute break are all monitored by CCTV and have swipe-card door access, which avoids any temptation to take a longer break than you are contractually entitled to
    11. The 20mph campus speed limit, in conjunction with the security vehicles being fully GPS and speed-tracked, ensures staff and students are always safe from harm

    Cons

None whatsoever. There are no negatives to working here; it's fantastic!

    Advice to Management

None. I'm pretty sure the almost constant turnover of staff within security is simply down to personal preference of clearly dissatisfied employees, nothing more. The management here do absolutely nothing wrong, they're so friendly and open to new ideas! Thinking back, I honestly don't know why I left.
