We’re taking steps to ensure the health and well-being of our employees and their families, the patients and families we serve, and the communities in which we live and work. Our actions have been, and will continue to be, driven by science, data and thoughtful policy approaches, as well as by empathy and compassion for those who are at particular risk from this virus. We must all work together to stem this outbreak.
Vertex is a global biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation to create transformative medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases.
We discovered and developed the first medicines to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare, life-threatening genetic disease. In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases.
Founded in 1989 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, our corporate headquarters is now located in Boston’s Innovation District, and our international headquarters is in London, United Kingdom. We currently employ 2,100 people in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia with nearly two-thirds of our staff dedicated to research and development.
Vertex is consistently recognized as one of the industry’s top places to work by Science Magazine, The Boston Globe, Boston Business Journal and the San Diego Business Journal. Our research and medicines have also received esteemed recognitions, including the Robert J. Beall Therapeutics Development Award, the French Prix Galien and the British Pharmacological Society awards.
The diversity and authenticity of our people is part of what makes Vertex unique. We recognize that each employee brings diverse perspectives and strengths, and, by embracing those strengths and celebrating differences, we inspire innovation together.
We’re committed to providing employees with resources to achieve their professional and personal goals. Our employee-led networks, called Employee Resource Networks (ERNs), foster connectivity and collaboration across all levels and engage colleagues in personal and professional enrichment opportunities such as mentoring, career development, community outreach and cultural awareness activities. Current ERNs include:
At Vertex, we have some of the industry's best and brightest people helping us achieve our mission of discovering transformative medicines to help people with serious diseases like cystic fibrosis.Whether they are in the lab, part of our business development team or on the phones with patients, we depend on a talented global workforce to lead the charge as we work toward developing tomorrow's breakthrough medicines.
Giving back is part of who we are – it’s in our DNA. Over the last 30 years, Vertex has grown into a leading global biotech that continually innovates to bring transformative medicines to people around the world. As we’ve grown, so too has our commitment to giving back to patients and the community - from our annual Day of Service, to our Vertex Learning Lab, scholarship awards and our patient assistance programs.
Vertex is committed to inspiring and equipping under-resourced students to become the next generation of scientific leaders. We have developed strong relationships with local education leaders, schools in our neighborhoods and students across our communities to help provide young people with a pathway to success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.
Community service is an important part of our Vertex values. Each year, our employees participate in a global Day of Service collectively providing approximately 500 hours of volunteer service to dozens of nonprofit organizations and schools in our communities. Unique to Vertex is that a key focus of this day is our STEM education projects, which range from packaging science kits loaded with equipment and educational material for classrooms to going on-site to schools to conduct mini science fairs with the goal of getting kids interested in science. Watch our video below.
Team Vertex is about camaraderie and connecting with the patient community. We support events like races and walks that help patients and their families. Our employees enthusiastically take part in these events.
Our people are driven, lifelong learners, who take charge of their careers. They are exceptional at what they do, which is why we are committed to providing opportunities that empower them to grow their talents and thrive beyond their expectations. Employees from every level and function can benefit from experiences such as job rotations, mentorships, and skill development workshops.
