I have been working at Yorkshire Building Society full-time
Benefits - the overall head office package is very good - holiday entitlement is on the high side; bonus can be good; pension contribution is better than most; flexible hours is an excellent benefit that's fairly well embedded - although be warned as there are some old fashioned managers who still refuse to trust their teams to do it. Fortunately I've never had this problem however.
Work/life balance is excellent
Office/location - Head office in Leeds is modern and central; great for socialising.
Chief Officers are generally nice, genuine people. They'll often say hello and ask how your days going - it really does make a difference. SLT on the other hand are a mixed bunch.
Projects - there's a lot of change happening, which does keep things interesting. Some areas who are really trying hard to change things.
Career progression - a lot of young talent exits the organisation after a few years. It's a very cozy place to work, so those higher up won't move on and generally they just want to keep things ticking along, doing what they know whilst sitting it out to retirement. There's a lot of chaff and deadwood sat in jobs that aren't needed.
Managers - Most middle managers are actually really poor people managers. They are nice people, but have no idea how to develop, inspire or generally lead. There's been effort recently to correct this but, really, most of the managers simply lack the ability or willingness to change.
Whilst pay is probably average, it feels like YBS do all they can NOT to pay you more as you develop.
Silos - different departments don't work well together. It's a well known issue. A lot of work is duplicated around the business because of it, which creates friction.
Hot desking - a horrible consultancy practice that really doesn't work and creates a lot of tension.
Advice to Management
Make some bold moves. Remove the dead wood.
The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Yorkshire Building Society.
Compentancy based Interview. 2 Branch Managers interviewed me. Just have good examples of things you have done in previous employment and expect to be questioned further on your answers. Took about hour and a half
