ZEAL Group – Why Work For Us?

The ZEAL Group is united in its vision: Create a better world of lottery!

"The lottery industry has not had its Airbnb or Netflix moment, yet. We want to change that."Helmut Becker, CEO, ZEAL.

Through innovation, digitalisation and investment we aim to disrupt and develop the $300bn lottery industry.

The ZEAL Group is an international group of businesses, dating back to 1999, that delivers lottery products and B2B solutions around the globe. The Group includes business units Lottovate, Ventura24, Lotto Network and ZEAL Investments, as well as affiliated companies Smartgames Technologies, MyLotto24 and Tipp24 Services.

All of the ZEAL business units strive to build products and technology that will disrupt the lottery industry and bring better products and experiences to lottery players around the world.

The ZEAL Group has offices in London, Madrid and Hamburg. Our staff come from all around the world - over 25 nationalities and growing! Amongst the Group companies, are approx. 300 diverse and talented individuals, including software engineers, product managers, designers, lawyers and operations teams. We believe in creating an exciting and dynamic environment where our staff can really perform and explore their interests.

We believe that a great company is full of great people. Our culture embraces everyone’s diversity and the different perspectives they bring. We know we work better when everyone feels like they belong. We work as a team but we want your individuality to shine through.

The holding company, ZEAL Network SE, is based in London and is listed on the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.  To date, ZEAL has generated stakes of 3 billion+ euros and contributed over 650 million euros in taxes and duties.

"ZEAL’s financial strength and cash-generating business model, coupled with almost two decades of online lottery experience, put it in a strong position to grow its international business,”Jonas Mattsson, CFO, ZEAL.

Through our investment arm, ZEAL Investments, we have acquired stakes in revolutionary disruptive businesses. These investments include Free Postcode Lottery and Omaze that remove the pay-to-play aspect of a lottery. In tune the Group’s values, ZEAL Investments also pioneers internal innovation and has its own incubator programme for business ideas coming from within the company.

We also champion corporate social responsibility. We support many great causes and charities, through our CSR programme, including SportsAid, The London Community Foundation and the Marie Keating Cancer Foundation.

ZEAL prides itself on being a vibrant and diverse company. We cherish the well-being of our employees and this is reflected in our corporate culture.

We want people to challenge and innovate. We want people who will question the status quo. We don’t settle for how it’s always been done and we want people who will exceed expectations and push boundaries. We have created a culture of continuous learning and collaboration. There are brown bag sessions, language lessons, development dialogues and hackathons. We want everyone to reach their full potential and we will support you to grow.

Corporate culture

We believe that a great company is full of great people. Our culture embraces everyone’s diversity and the different perspectives they bring. We know we work better when everyone feels like they belong. We work as a team but we want your individuality to shine through.

Our culture embodies fun. We like to celebrate together and know that all work and no play is definitely not us.

We have monthly get-togethers and events, global annual staff gatherings. There are Monday morning breakfasts, Friday afternoon cocktails and in between, there are fun and games with ping-pong tournaments, foosball competitions, x-box games and a kitchen stocked with awesome coffee machines, various teas, daily fresh fruit and other goodies.

Corporate volunteering

Honouring our corporate culture and in response to a staff survey, where over 90% of participants expressed interested in volunteering, ZEAL Group has developed a corporate volunteering program to reflect those wishes. This gives our employees an opportunity to get personally involved and donate their skills and time to the good causes in the CSR program.

Whether in respect of their profession, origins, or any other features, ZEAL employees are truly diverse. The variety of our employees is becoming increasingly more important, in particular when it comes to the internationalisation of our company. Aside from that, it also makes for an interesting and inspiring work life.

Compatibility of family and work

We want to help make work and family life more compatible for our employees with children. Therefore, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work from home.

Promotion of women

It goes without saying for us, that women should have the same opportunities and possibilities as their male colleagues. The ratio of women employed at our company is over 36 per cent and we are working on bringing this number up.

Personal development

In a fast-changing working environment, continuous learning is essential. We, therefore, offer every employee the opportunity to extend their knowledge by attending external seminars at least once per year. The annual performance review helps guarantee fairness with regard to assessment, feedback, strengths, development areas and salary.

Our Engineering Team consists of full-stack engineers in our London office, as well as team members in Madrid and Hamburg to help create world-class web & mobile based lottery and instant win games for target markets around the world. Partnering with charities and other organisations you and the team will be helping to build engaging, social games for their users and fans to help them create new revenue streams and better ways to engage their customer bases.

The team is working to clear and sane deadlines to create, improve and support front- and back-end code for core gameplay features and all of the related infrastructure and management of our games. The team works within a framework of fortnightly sprints, with a comprehensively automated testing pipeline and continuous deployment. We share responsibility for ensuring all our code is clear, robust, well documented, unit tested and peer-reviewed. Code quality here is far from a box-ticking exercise: engineers here take the initiative in proposing – and implementing – improvements to our standards, processes, tools and systems. All engineers here write production code from their first week onwards.

A supportive environment

We have a thorough onboarding process – including mentoring and up-to-date “what you need to know” guide – that takes new employees through all the tools, frameworks and processes that they need to know to do the job.

Each person is assigned a technical mentor (for any programming questions they have) and everyone on the team will be happy to guide them around anything else they need to know about working here.

Moreover, our commitment to continuous learning and development is very strong. Our experience is that developers learn faster and better when they are acquiring practical knowledge and skills from colleagues and putting it directly to use solving real problems – rather than sitting in a classroom working on abstract or “toy” problems.

Any new engineering hire will find themselves surrounded by very bright and capable developers, all of whom are approachable and willing to help.

What we care about

We value ability, aptitude and motivation much more highly than the exact list of technologies and frameworks that you know, what industries you’ve worked in, or how well we recognise your past employers. We very much value integrity, the ability to do what you say you are going to do, and to care about treating every single one of our customers fairly.

Some basic familiarity with probability would be useful. We are building lottery and instant win games after all. Much more important than that, however, is a good attention to detail and an ability to be actively involved in trade-off discussions about how to engineer software to meet the business’s short- and long-term needs.

In terms of coding experience, it would certainly help if you’re familiar with full-stack development (including using relational databases and related frameworks such as Hibernate and Spring) in a commercial environment. Experience with JavaScript (ES6 and React) would be useful. Experience with developing within a micro-services architecture would also be a plus.

Tech Stack

Technology is at the heart of what we do: we are in the process of building a scalable, high-performance multi-tenant micro service software platform that will serve the business for many years to come. We use a number of different technologies including Java 8, Docker, Spring Boot, React, SASS and PostgreSQL. We don’t expect you to know all of these before you arrive. It’s the job of the rest of the team to help you quickly get up to speed on everything you need to know – from new frameworks to how our build system works.

In terms of equipment, each engineer has a high-end PC or laptop along with dual 27-inch monitors. Engineers use either Linux or macOS to develop on.

At ZEAL Group, we aim to make a difference, not just in the online lottery sector – but also in the wider world.

As an international group of businesses, we use our success to support great causes and projects. We also create value for our stakeholders and build strong, meaningful partnerships with inspiring individuals and organisations.

Our social responsibility advocacy fits into the following areas of work: Community, Next Generation, Partnerships, Responsible Gaming, and zero tolerance for any form of Modern Slavery.

UNICEF helps children in need around the world. It operates in more than 190 countries and is recognised as the largest organisation of its kind.

UNICEF Norway partnered with Lottovate to create UNICEF Lotteriet, a high-frequency win online lottery game. A significant portion of UNICEF Lotteriet’s proceeds will be used by UNICEF Norway to raise funds for great global causes.

ONCE (The Spanish National Organization for the Blind) supports people who are blind, or have a visual impairment, to lead independent lives. Established in 1938, it is proud to have created a series of specialised services that have enabled thousands of people to achieve their potential. Their work includes creating jobs, offering scholarships, and building hospitals, schools, and specially equipped sports and recreational facilities.

Cruz Roja Española (The Red Cross, Spain) established ‘The Red Cross Gold Sweepsakes’ in 1980 to help raise funds for the charity’s humanitarian work, providing emergency assistance and disaster relief. In its 33-year history, the Sweepstakes have enabled many Spaniards to benefit from both its prizes and its charitable work.

LottoGiving offers a unique opportunity for smaller charities to raise funds by hosting their own branded lottery-betting product.

Hosted by ZEAL’s Lotto Network, the product is offered at zero cost to charitable organisations and community groups. It enables them to raise money for good causes, while offering life-changing prizes.

Helping our Community

The Good Neighbourhood Fund

In 2014, ZEAL affiliated company MyLotto24 set up The Good Neighbourhood Fund, through the London Community Foundation. The Fund enables people to overcome challenges in their local neighbourhoods and improve their quality of life.

The London Community Foundation’s expertise in reaching grassroots initiatives and community organisations ensures that funding reaches those that need it most.

The Marie Keating Foundation, based in Ireland, was set up by her family after her death from breast cancer. The type of cancer she suffered was easily treatable, but Marie died because she did not know enough about cancer and the importance of early detection.

The Foundation offers a range of cancer awareness and support services with a key focus on ensuring that men, women and families are provided with the necessary information to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest stages. MyLotto24 ( contributes to the Comfort Fund. The Fund provides financial assistance to people who are currently receiving treatment for any kind of cancer, and who, as a result, find themselves in financial difficulty.

Work Positive, part of the Terence Higgins Trust, is an employability programme which provides people living with HIV, who are long-term unemployed, with valuable work experience, training and mentoring opportunities to support them back towards the workplace. ZEAL is delighted to be a new partner to the programme, offering an exciting opportunity to a motivated individual who is looking to build their skills and gain experience. Our candidate will be working in our marketing team, learning about different methods and tools used in communications.

The Community Foundation for Ireland was established in 2000 with the intention of helping to grow philanthropy in Ireland and building a permanent fund to support charitable causes. CFI is part of a global network of community foundations. MyLotto24 also undertakes grant-making in association with The London Community Foundation.

We have set up the Tipp24 Fund which will be administered by The Community Foundation for Ireland and will be supporting a number of grassroots projects, working on the ground in Ireland. Our aim is to support projects who are working front line in their local community, tackling difficult and challenging issues.

Our culture and our people are what makes us unique and our success is because of the dedication, creativity and innovation of the great team we have.

We are a value led organisation where the ‘how’ matters as much as the ‘what’. We celebrate our successes and learn from our mistakes. We like creating, we are innovative and brave in exploring the new.

    Hedging Analyst Interview

    Anonymous Employee in London, England
    Accepted Offer
    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ZEAL Group (London, England) in April 2017.

I applied for this position through LinkedIn job links. The job description was good enough to give me a rough understanding of the job.
Within a day or two, I received a phone call from Zeal. It is more like an introduction of they are doing and my background info. Then at last I am given a quiz to finish with a week. The quiz was difficult for me as I have barely no idea of the job. But I managed to work it out and thanks to it I know what job is roughly about.

In the face to face interview, I am basically given two piece of paper with one having some programming questions and one having some statistical questions. I thought I did roughly OK but the interviewer (actually my manager later on) was really nice to me and made me feel less nervous. I was shown around the office during a short break and I loved this. I recommend every interviewer does this as it really visualises the working environment in the mind of the interviewee.
After the interview, I wait for like a week and got the job confirmed. Really love my job so far.
