    Product Design Lead Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Berlin (Germany)
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zenjob (Berlin (Germany)) in October 2019.

    Interview

After my online application I received an invitation to a video call with a tech recruiter. Appointment planing was seamless and the call itself was on time.
Unfortunately, within the call I felt a constant grudge or vibe of annoyance from the recruiter towards me. It was quite challenging staying professional as an applicant while my interview partner was constantly looking through the air while I answered her questions. The generic and dull interview questions ("What is your biggest strengh, ...your biggest weakness, ...a project you are proud of") also didn´t help to ignore this attitude.
It even lead to the situation that the recruiter interrupted me in the middle of my answers, jumping to the next one without any clarifications about whatever potential time or connection issue lead her to do that.

The call ended with the typical "we will reach out to you" phrases, only to be followed up by a check up by me one week later if they would have any new insights reg. the process or my fit after the call. A day later I then received a phone call from the recruiter explaining to me that they decided to move on with another candidate but want to keep me in their talent pool none the less. Fair enough and totally fine for me!

But after I wanted to check if the "keep you in our talent pool" default phase actually also would mean they automatically considered me for the still quite fitting "senior" role below the one I applied first, my email request once again was ignored. I sent a second email after that, only to be once again stalled with a default reaction "we have another potential candidate in offer state at the moment but will consider you afterwards". Not surprisingly I haven´t heard from them ever since (about 2 weeks ago).

I can completely understand, if someone has a bad day every once in a while. But this experience felt less like a bad day and more like a personal issue based on whatever issue that was not communicated. And even if I completely ignore the "subjective" matter of personal interaction, this did not feel like a professional stance of a recruiter at all.

It made me learn about their real company values and customer/employee/applicant treatment and conclude to be happy not doing business with them after all.
