Zonal – Why Work With Us?

Zonal was established in 1979, when the McLean family identified the need for a solution to manage and control their hotel operations near Edinburgh. The solution was the first electronic-point-of-sale (EPoS) system on the market, invented by Zonal’s founder, the late Ralph McLean.

This early EPoS system was admired by legendary brewer Scottish & Newcastle who then adopted our system across their network of pubs, providing both head office and site managers access to a wealth of information.

Ralph handed the reins over to his son, Stuart, who became CEO of Zonal in 1997. Alongside his talented team, Stuart continued to grow and transform the company into what is now: the UK’s largest hospitality technology company.

Zonal has develed and evolved from a small Scottish business to a company that employs over 500 people whilst still maintaining its proud Scottish heritage. Zonal remains a true family business with five family members on the board. To add external talent and expertise, the company recruited key roles such as CFO, CTO and COO as non-family members, who have been carefully selected so they fit with the Zonal ethos.

We now serve more than 16,000 businesses, including bars & pubs, restaurants, garden centres, holiday parks, theatres and many more. From small independents through to large chains, some of our customers include JD Wetherspoon, Greene King, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, ATG & Haven Holidays.

    Pros

Most of the staff are genuine please to work with. Delievery managers are generally great people to work under as most encourage good working practises, personal development and support their teams.

    Cons

Development side of the business is segregated to the rest of the business. Whilst dev teams implement agile like practises, pressure from sales and senior management can be counter intutive.

Common to deal with negative / skepitcal individuals which can be infectious, like in many organisations.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve flow of communication. More transparency in decisions.

    React Developer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Edinburgh, Scotland
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Zonal (Edinburgh, Scotland) in May 2019.

    Interview

Sit down written test followed by a 3 Panel interview. This is the second and last interview I will ever be attending at Zonal. There really need to start outlining what skills they require prior to selecting to selecting candidates for interview as they are wasting everyone time. Prior to doing the test I asked the tech lead why there where asking .net questions for a contract React dev role? His response was that all the backend was in C# so you need to know that as well. I don't know why did they not advertise a React/C# developer as that is what they are looking for?

    Interview Questions

    • Half the written questions where C# .net related asking about subjects like abstract classes etc. The rest of the questions where standard JS and CSS questions with none on React.js.   1 Answer
