Our story began back in 1979 when the McLean Family identified the need to monitor sales, stock and wastage in their family hotel near Edinburgh when they noticed shortfalls in stock and takings. Zonal founder, the late Ralph McLean, concerned over his £30 a night loss, invented a solution to manage and control operations and the first EPoS system was created.
That year, an employee of famed brewer Scottish & Newcastle came in for a pint and liked what he saw. The brewery went on to adopt the system across their pub estate, using it to enable both head office and site managers to have a level of information that had never before been available.
Zonal expanded its customer base and started to supply to the regional breweries and pub groups, including JD Wetherspoon and Greene King. In order to fund growth in the business the family hotel was sold and the business and family home moved to Forth Street in Edinburgh. The Forth Street site remained the company’s head office until 2014 when it moved to state of the art premises at Tanfield, still in Zonal’s home town of Edinburgh.
Zonal has developed and evolved from a small Scottish business to a company that employs over 650 people whilst still maintaining its proud Scottish heritage. Zonal remains a true family business with five family members on the board. To add external talent and expertise, the company recruited key roles such as CFO and COO as non-family members, who have been carefully selected so they fit with the Zonal ethos.
Today, Zonal solutions are used daily in over 16,000 leisure and hospitality businesses across the UK, ranging from restaurant and pub groups, night clubs to, garden centres. The company’s full product suite of technology solutions enable Zonal to offer a fully integrated service to any hospitality business.

Keep listening to your customers
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Zonal (Edinburgh, Scotland) in August 2015.
Phone interview with hiring manager. Then an in house interview with the hiring manager, his boss and an HR rep. After discussion a skills test which wasn't technical, but general IQ questions really.
