Company Updates

  • Here's Galina Koleva, Senior QA Engineer at Zopa, on why she believes diversity is such an important component in any QA team: “As a QA, my core responsibility is to question the quality of the software. Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds makes the product better – as we are different, we have different working styles and approaches, different ideas. All those help me to find issues which otherwise I might have missed."

  • We're pleased to announce that Andrew Hawkins, start-up entrepreneur and mobile technology expert, has joined us as new CTO. Prior to joining us, Andrew was Global CTO of Digital Channels at HSBC. He says, "Tech sits at the heart of what Zopa does and is key to providing customers with differentiated financial products that are great value and easy to use. I look forward to continuing to innovate and to scaling Zopa’s great products to more customers.”

Zopa – Why Work With Us?

In 2005 we built the first ever peer-to-peer (P2P) lending company to give people access to simpler, better-value loans and investments. Since then we've helped hundreds of thousands of customers take the stress out of money by building our business on honesty, transparency and trust.

It works so well that we want to give our customers access to other great products and tools, empowering them to better manage their money. That's why we've launched a different type of bank:

  • You get a fair deal as standard. At Zopa there are no catches like offers only for new customers. Our products are built so that we win when you win.
  • Managing your money is no sweat. With handy tools to help you get stuff done and helpful people to talk to when you need to. Easy.
  • We go beyond 'good enough'. We listen to what you want and change with your needs. We are built for the future so we can evolve as quickly as possible, using the latest tech to give you the best possible experience.

Zopian culture

We’re proud to enjoy a welcoming culture that combines the best of scale and startup agility. Zopians work in collaborative cross-functional teams with a sharp focus on the customer. We are data-obsessed and a leading innovator in FinTech.

We believe that a strong team starts with a strong culture. We hold weekly company meetings, host meetups, yoga classes and board game nights, and have a very well-used ping pong table. And it’s not all about us! We also encourage everyone to take two paid days every year to volunteer for a good cause.

Zopian Values

We want Zopa to be the best place to work for all Zopians.

That’s why we have a shared set of Values, you could think of them as Zopa’s DNA. Our values help to inform what it means to be a Zopian - how we act and don’t act each and every other day.

Customer Champions: We care about our customers and reflect that in everything we do. We create positive long-term outcomes for our customers

At Zopa, we work in tribes and squads, and our software engineers are based in our offices in London and Barcelona. This means you can be based in either location, and you’ll get to travel too, as our engineers occasionally switch between offices to work collaboratively and maintain strong communication among the tribes.

All tribes encourage fresh ideas, contribution and open conversation, making Zopa a brilliant opportunity for creative engineers who want a sense of ownership of the problems they’re solving.

Career progression for engineers is clearly mapped out at Zopa. You have the option to step up and take on more responsibility if that’s what you want. We have various levels of engineer, starting at junior and up to lead level, across all the tribes. There’s also the option to move between tribes so if you want to move your career in a new direction, we’ll look to see how we can support that.

Interested in our tech stack and the tools our engineers use? Right now, it includes Java 8, Kafka, Kotlin, React, React-Native, Kubernetes, Docker, Redis, Babel and more.

A word from one of our engineers, Demi Ariyo:

“At Zopa, each day is different, which means you need to adapt fast and communicate efficiently. The daily duty is to work with the developers by testing code and ensuring it works. We have a culture that encourages learning and we have access to resources like LinkedIn Learning, Pluralsight, Codeacademy and Codeschool.”

    Software Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Employee in London, England
    Accepted Offer
    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

I applied through other source. The process took 3+ weeks. I interviewed at Zopa (London, England) in October 2020.

The interview process has a lot of stages, but they all make sense. I was informed about the interview process structure (5 stages) from the beginning and always knew what would be next. Overall, I had a positive experience and it is because:
    1) Helpful recruiter who was always in touch. A lot of companies I had an interview with allowed themselves not to answer me at all, adding more stress, ignored my questions, neglected to give proper feedback. This is not about Zopa: they always answered me in time, gave feedback after each stage, explained how to prepare for the next stages etc. In my opinion, that's a great sign when a company respects your time and effort.
    2) The company really wants to find someone who would fit. I was surprised that they had the whole stage for an informal chat about my experience, background, motivation. I found it much more helpful than standard soulless 'theoretical questions' interview most companies do (as I had a chance to ask my questions too). This stage set this company apart from others because I stopped feeling like the interview process should be a one-way street.
Apart from phone screening and further chat, there was a take-home test (Javascript, React) and 1-hour pairing later (also very straight forward React task). The team was paying attention to how I react when I make mistakes, how I approach the task, how I try to find a solution etc.
The final stage was the soft-skills/experience chat with different team members.
