      Nasty characters and uninspiring work

      Nov 9, 2021 - Consultant

      Pros

It's a well known company in the public affairs sphere and there are opportunities to work with colleagues worldwide

      Cons

Most of the directors in the London office are nasty pieces of work. Complaints are made and issues are raised but they continue to get away with appalling team management It was no surprise when the external MD didn’t last more than a year and was quickly replaced by a senior member of another APCO office - because APCO is not open to changing its mindset and continues to be in denial about how bad the culture is There is a specific type of personality that thrives at APCO (arrogant, selfish or full of s) and if you fit that mould you will thrive here, if not then be prepared to be taken advantage of. The favourites are put first, even when they underperform and a lot of people a have left or are planning to leave. If you look closely, the work we do for clients is the low-budget uninspiring kind. In general, most clients are not that well-known and the work is incredibly boring. At the top, the senior team seems to be completely out of touch with reality. The MD celebrates new acquisitions or clients from mind-numbing industries while everyone stares in disbelief questioning when they will actually start addressing the low salaries, over-servicing and lack of work-life balance. If you raise all these issues, be prepared to be gaslighted by the MD or other directors and simply ignored by HR - the latter will act surprised but they’ve heard it all before.

I am really sorry to hear that this is your experience of our London business and colleagues and I would genuinely welcome an open conversation with you to discuss your observations in more detail. This does not resonate with my knowledge of the London team and client work, but I’m really keen to understand your perspective more. Please do reach out to me and let's discuss directly. Avoid. It's toxic.

      Pros

It's an international company and you can work with colleagues across Europe and the US.

      Cons

The work is incredibly boring, as are the clients. It's monotonous and uninspiring. But you'll be expected to work until 10pm. Consistently. Without any hint of the salary to match. Senior management and HR is totally out of touch. 'Focus groups' to improve the toxic work culture are constantly held, but feedback is never ever taken on board. My peers and I were consistently gaslighted by the current MD and ignored by HR when we raised these issues. The reaction was always the same - acting surprised and pretending they had never heard it before.

It is really unfortunate that this is your perception of the London leadership team, client work and culture. I would very much value the opportunity to talk to you directly to understand more about why you feel this way and some more context about the experiences you have had in raising issues which have not been addressed. Please do reach out to me directly and we can talk further in confidence about this. Paolo Compostella, President Europe

Opportunities to grow and work with the best

Aug 26, 2021 - Senior Associate Director in London, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Strong culture - Great colleagues: funny, collaborative and supportive - Entrepreneurial and room to try new things with little sign-off/red tape - Diversity & Inclusion initiatives: webinars & lunch’n’learns, partnerships, real changes to the way we recruit, unconscious bias training, Accelerate What’s Right. Leaders who walk the walk - Kept jobs during the pandemic when friends were being laid off at other consultancies - Flexible and “grown-up” with regards to working from home (even before Covid) - great for parents who need to balance home and work - Respect your holidays/time off and no weekend emails

      Cons

      - Sometimes a little ambiguous. Some processes could certainly be clearer - Not a 9-5 at all (but I get consultancy life) - It feels incredibly busy right now and sometimes it takes a while to hire people which stretches the team - Some managers have a better sense of work load than others and seem more aware of how their teams are doing that others
