I have been working at AWE PLC full-time for less than a year

    Pros

9 day fortnight and a decent pension.

    Cons

A horrible culture of bullying resulting in staff being forced out, and HR refusing/being unable to take any grievances of bullying seriously. It's a really slow organisation with projects consistently failing to meet deadlines/fall within budget. What's even more frustrating is the attitude of 'ah well that's AWE for you!' being held rather than anyone looking into why such failings occur.

I have been working at AWE PLC

    Pros

9DF, salary and pension are above average (although not considering local living costs which almost London prices) basically impossible to get fired, Lots of training available if you suck up to the right people, and fit the company image Strong graduate and apprentice community Huge push on WISE, inclusion and equality. Trying to change for the better

    Cons

Everyone knows their job is safe so no one really tries very hard. Most staff spend half their time chatting, the busiest area on site is the coffee shop, should be a clue! One deep in a lot of areas. Lots of bottle necks. Incredible levels of bureaucracy, some people seem to be employed exclusively to stop work getting done. Lots of senior employees coasting out to retirement. Can be a bit of a management lottery..., some are great some are not.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the staff who are actually doing the work, and their issues. Not the yes men and project managers looking after themselves that want to get up into your ivory towers with you...

    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at AWE PLC full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent apprentice/graduate scheme Nice people, all keen to socialise. 9 day fortnight Good pension (though not as good as before) Flexible working for end of career types who wish a slow wind down before retirement.

    Cons

Culture bounces between toxic and so laid back it's horizontal Accountability at management levels is evasive and teflon coated Business processes stuck in the 80's with no desire to change because "we've always done it that way"

    Advice to Management

The obsession with capital projects must cease. When you employ PhD management professionals, maybe listen to their advice.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at AWE PLC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to explore different areas of the business. Highly intelligent and experience colleagues there to guide you. Flexible and engaging graduate programme. AWE gives a great insight into the world of Defence. Offering up internal and external secondments within the industry. Whichever department you choose to make your career in, they will be keen to support you and make sure that you grow... within the business. There is a large comapny emphasis on work/life balance and line managers seek to support this. Ensuring a healthy work place culture exists.

    Cons

Project timelines are long - very long. It is likely that you will work across multiple projects, but unlikely you will see any from start to finish. Depending on the department you are in, the pace can be slow. Although AWE are currently seeking to change this and in some areas are succeeding, there is still an old-fashioned approach in some areas of the business.

    Advice to Management

Management and senior management need to work together to address the slow-paced culture in certain areas of the business and seek to align their strategies with those in the commerical world. This is important for the life and success of the business, for staff retention, and work-place satisfaction.
