      Pros

AbacusNext offers a great opportunity to learn and grow your career as it is an international company. In my opinion it is a great place to work and I am very happy to be part of AbacusNext team. Team is great, the pay is totally competitive and there are some quite good benefits.

      Pros

The Edinburgh office focuses on the HotDocs product suite which is an interesting product to work on, with a solid history and engaged set of customers. The staff are a good mix of some long-standing stalwarts and lots who have been there 2-3 years. Retention is really good and hiring is inclusive, there is a small but strong female presence with women in prominent and technical roles. Part-time working has been well supported within the team's culture. Development is encouraged, I felt well supported to transition into a more technical role. The culture is friendly, staff make time to help each other and HR encourage social activities, with an increasing effort to involve friends and family. The company pension is with Royal London and other financial perks such as Perkbox discounts are actually useful. The company's Covid response has been excellent, home working has been well supported with equipment, flexibility around childcare and good communication systems.

      Cons

The management in San Diego can feel quite distant, communication with the Edinburgh office could be improved. Performance reviews were lacking but have improved recently.

Great team culture and Covid response

      Pros

The Software Development team is full of great people who help you grow. It's a challenging and rewarding experience working for the company. The atmosphere in the Edinburgh office is great and the local management is really in tune with the product and employees. The switch to fully remote working due to Covid has been smooth.

      Cons

There can be a slight disconnect between the San Diego leadership and Edinburgh team

Great management in the UK Office

      Pros

Management who are highly experienced in their fields, know what they are doing and who want to see their team and members succeed. UK office is a good place to work in overall, with good opportunities. Handled Covid-19 crisis very well

      Cons

Sometimes lack of communication from the exec team in the US can be frustrating, the constant "restructuring" of the company can get tiresome

      On a downwards journey

      Pros

Some very good people amongst the bad ones.

      Cons

AbacusNext's acquisition of HotDocs has gone sour. Their approach has caused major problems in terms of product development capacity, staff retention, and effective sales management - the biggest problem is they really don't know how to fix things. A new CEO has been brought in, but his aim is just to get the business fit to sell-on, there's no interest in long term strategy. Many of the best people on the HotDocs side are jumping ship as they see what's on the cards. Difficult to see how the slide will be reversed.

      Pros

The Edinburgh office has great management who are practically minded, in touch with the needs of the staff and business, and trying to make improvements. Edinburgh management are flexible, reasonable, and sympathetic. The workload is variable, but Edinburgh seems to be aiming to staff appropriately to deal with the difficult times - to ensure that we are not overwhelmed. The technically minded people are all friendly, helpful, and worth knowing.

      Cons

The executive management in SanDiego appears to be the opposite. Difficult to believe that there are companies like this, and it's not all just silly parodies of american culture. After being acquired by Abacus Next, the company was downsized to around 30% of its original headcount, and three departments collapsed. The loss of combined product knowledge totals over 50 years. CEO once said we could "take [her] words to the bank" after having broken promises twice. Inter-office communication and training is attrocious, especially if your team is split across other offices. heavily promotes hero culture rather than employing sensible quantity and qualities of staff. "100% is not enough" was a slogan used internally. Actively refuses transfers between departments to avoid having to hire replacements. CEO revealed that the "golden nugget" program was used to adjudicate on whether staff would be eligible to receive raises / promotions / team transfers.

      Pros

There are none that I can think of.

      Cons

Too many to mention My advice to anyone is to read the bad reviews, they all give an accurate overview and disregard the positive review as they are totally fake. If you thinking of joining AbacusNext speak to someone privately who works there to get the real story.

      AbacusNext Response

      Corporate Communications

You haven't shared any details of your experience, so there isn't anything we can address directly other than to say it's clear you didn't have the sort of employee experience at AbacusNext that we'd hoped you would. We absolutely endorse the idea of any potential candidate reaching out to current employees to get a sense of our company. The people of AbacusNext are our greatest asset and our greatest advocates.

Degrading, No Communication, Doesn't Value Employees

      Pros

The actual products are decent, which means you can provide good service to clients. Many coworkers are lovely people, and work very hard under very difficult circumstances.

      Cons

VERY short-term outlook. The company is interested in rapid growth above sustainability, and as such puts exactly zero value in its employees. Recently, an office full of employees with almost 20 years of experience were fired without notice, but no time or resources were allocated for handovers of their knowledge and experience. As a result, the company now barely understand their own technology, data was lost, and project deadlines were pushed back heavily at the expense of clients. That's just one example of the dreadful culture at the company, largely centering on the San Diego head office. There are other examples of staff being fired without a plan for replacement or reorganisation, undertrained staff being presented with half-completed work to take over without any assistance or documentation, and employees being encouraged to cover their backs rather than fix mistakes. Pay is fairly standard, but benefits offered are generally the bare minimum. There are no standard pay-reviews. There is no onboarding process to speak of. When some staff join the company, they are simply pointed at a desk, given a ten minute chat on what their login details are, and told to look at the tutorials available to clients on the company's website. I fully expect this company to continue burning out on short-term plans until the sustainability issues become too much to overcome. Then they will "consolidate" (ie lay off staff and close offices) and sell the business on to someone else. I don't see a future beyond the next two years tops.
