I have been working at American Museum of Natural History part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to begin your career: as one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world you are exposed to many academics who are willing to help hone and train your critical thinking skills while offering advice and guidance. While there, I had the opportunity to be a part of many research projects that exposed me to the numerous dimensions of research. Due to my contributions I have been made coauthored on a couple of the Curator's work.

    Cons

Certain departments can be extremely disorganized. Egos are huge and plentiful and sometimes disputes between Curators and junior staff occur. If you are a grad student, they will take advantage of you and have you do tasks that you are not qualified for and are not being adequately compensated for.

I have been working at American Museum of Natural History full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Respected science institution
Fantastic coworkers; Staff is helpful, smart, friendly and invested in doing the best they can
Great opportunity to make an impact in the community
    Free tickets
    Decent healthcare

    Cons

Senior leadership is out of touch
Department structure is backwards; VPs and C-Level staff fight, bicker, and stab each other in the back for glory. Incredibly siloed work
    Terrible pay
    Little room for advancement

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your staff
    Pay a decent wage
Ditch the glory-seeking capital campaigns and useless apps, and fix the existing decrepit infrastructure
Don't take millions from donors that don't believe in climate change or science

I have been working at American Museum of Natural History full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a truly fun and interesting place, and offers unique opportunities unequalled anywhere else.

    Cons

Like many nonprofits, because it is a desirable place to work it takes advantage of employees by severely under-compensating them. I make $10,000-15,000 less than the average for my position than I would elsewhere.
The museum also eliminated 401K matching, raised the cost of health care and cut pensions for new employees, yet it is building a $325 million new building- so you can see where its priorities lie.

    Advice to Management

Well-cared-for employees are not as glamorous a legacy as a shiny new building, but are just as important (if not more so). This institution cannot run without the high caliber of motivated people that it attracts; please show them that they are valued by increasing salaries and benefits, even if it takes funding from more visible projects.

I worked at American Museum of Natural History part-time

    Pros

You are working at one of the world's most famous museum, whats not to love? You get to meet so many people and learn so many things its great to be here.

    Cons

There is hardly any room to move up.
The environment is really tough to work in because it lacks diversity

    Advice to Management

Don't ask for feedback and get mad when you hear it, learn and work towards making the AMNH as a whole better and inclusive.
