    Negative Outlook

I worked at American University of Sharjah full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Salary and benefits, including housing and insurance

    Cons

everything else....the students are lazy, dishonest, manipulate based on online student evaluation, management does not help despite the fact they know students are cheating, in short it is a cardboard factory. This is the general trend all over middle-east. Their degrees are useless and should not be recognized in any decent western university.

    Advice to Management

why? nothing will change as long as country itself practices slavery

    Pros

With the housing provided and utilities covered, your salary is likely to exceed what one would earn in Europe or the US.
    No commute

    Cons

This university is in crisis. Of the 350 faculty members, more than 50 have left this year. Everyone who has options is looking for jobs elsewhere. Anyone who knows academia, knows that losing 15% of faculty in a year is a huge vote of no confidence.
--While one supposedly has job security here, the truth is that they will fire anyone who opposes the direction the chancellor has chosen. Given that he does not know how to run a university, this is very distressing.
—The University does not know how to actually support research.

    Advice to Management

Fire everyone in the senior administration and start again. The entire university is being run into the ground by administrators with no scruples.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. good housing

    Cons

Extreme prejudice against certain religious/ethnic communities. or races The top management and faculty members belonging to particular ethnic/religious communities hold all the key positions and power. They control students and direct them against those who do not fit in ensuring others get fired. These groups favor friends. Middle-east in general is racist against certain religious/ethnic communities.

    Advice to Management

Diversification of employees is required to avoid politics/power struggle..

I worked at American University of Sharjah full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse culture; networking opportunities with interesting people from around the world; a unique experience; reasonable resources.

    Cons

No privacy whatsoever - everything is monitored and recorded from phone calls, to internet usage and emails; absolutely nothing to do outside of work; every person is in it for themselves - very little collaboration; very little support from administration and HR; zero confidence in the management of the institution; not a healthy environment in which to live (poor air quality, poor water quality, almost no healthcare of any kind). I believe many people come here with the best of intentions, but quickly become disillusioned with the professional climate. I really do not know of anyone who left and had positive things to say - other than they were glad to get out.
