      Good but not perfect

      Pros

The company genuinely cares about its employees. Arup undertake interesting projects and employ some very intelligent people who are leaders in their field. Benefits are the best I have seen from civil engineering firm. London office is nice and is centrally located. Office culture is relaxed. You can move between departments and offices quite easily if you like.

      Cons

There is definitely an "Arup arrogance", with people thinking Arup is the best at everything. This is especially prevalent in staff who have not worked elsewhere. Promotions are not transparent and do not seem to be based on your ability to do your job but on how good you are at networking and meeting the right people.

Good employer - Fair with good work-life balance

      Pros

      - Good interesting projects to work on. Prestige and company name is also very good for CV. - Employer is fair and gives employees a voice and listens to concerns fairly reasonably - Work-life balance can be very good - Employee ownership means that profits don't always come first - Emphasis on equality, diversity and treating people fairly is admirable - Fairly generous benefits package - Fairly flexible in allowing people get on in doing what they find interesting. - Good sociable working environment with diverse groups of people though this has somewhat waned due to COVID. - Work unbound scheme allows for people to work hours that suit them, very generous compared to other places with hours.

      Cons

      - Timesheet system can be bureaucratic and Project Managers are often reluctant to approve overtime. - Pay is not the best in the industry especially at lower grades. - Work slowing down could mean struggling to book time with lots of pressure on finding jobs to keep billable quite stressful.

      Great learning experience...

      Pros

The buildings are nice. If you like learning there are opportunities to learn new things. The benefits are good. Lots of opportunities to work on interesting projects.

      Cons

There is a significant amount of unpaid overtime. You may be asked to do jobs you were not hired for and still be expected to perform in your current role to a high standard. You will only get promoted if someone retires or leaves the company. Some departments are toxic and cause burn out. There is a is hierarchical system and the internal culture is stuck in the "1970s when all the rules about behaviour and workplaces were different". There is also a problem with mice.
