"Losing competitive edge though poor decision making"

    StarStarStarStarStar

I have been working at AspenTech

    Pros

Lovely people Good location with ok facilities Good social community Some very good managers Good starting salary Chances to travel

    Cons

Poor execution against strategy Top heavy Managers have little decision making abilities, simplest decisions take weeks and go right to the CEO. This makes the rest of us constantly wondering who's actually in control. Do not keep up with the market rate of salary. Declining market Too sensitive to share price changes You are nothing but a number

    Advice to Management

Staff are wiser to what's going on than you think, the walls have thin ears...

I worked at AspenTech full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good people. Good at keeping costs down.

    Cons

Extremely high turnover due to poor executive management and poor pay/raises. You can receive a high performance rating in your annual review and then are rewarded with an almost non-existent raise. The CFO talks negatively about almost every employee that leaves, which is extremely unprofessional and a terrible way to lead. Terrible communication between the executive team. Terrible systems. They are also a "no... thrills" company, so don't expect any company outings or team building activities besides the annual cookout which is essentially an extended lunch.

    Advice to Management

Look in the mirror. The constant turnover that has been plaguing the company for years might actually be caused by something other than your employee sucking. And even if that was the case, you should take some ownership for constantly hiring poor workers instead of acting like nothing could ever be your fault.

I worked at AspenTech full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Culture is great. Everyone at Aspen are really good people. Average Benefits. Not the best. Not the worst. Frequent company "AspenFUN" days.

    Cons

The company as a whole is very disorganized. Promotions are minimum. The Inside Sales team is less than 10 years old so they're still trying to figure things out. Every 6 months or so the upper management changes the sales structure. You get hired for one job and then are told you have to do something completely different. The Commission is not paid out for 3 months and this is only if the customer pays. So you... can close a deal get "credit" for it but not paid. Upper Management treats their employees like children. Work/life balance is minimal. You can't officially work from home, it's really up to your management and what your role is.

    Advice to Management

University hire program is great but if you want your employees to feel valued. Treat and talk to them like adults. Just because someone is young does not mean they do not deserve to be treated as an equal.

I have been working at AspenTech

    Pros

Good people can be found in the company but they are not really valued.

    Cons

Productive people are used to advance the careers of the suck-ups. Realistic planning is non-existent as the expectation is for 100%+ dedication with unrealistic "challenges". Product management/marketing are clueless top down. They are too busy advancing their own careers instead of creating value.

    Advice to Management

Have a strategy and respect your human capital. The talk is nice but...

    Positive Outlook

I worked at AspenTech full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

World-class products, many really good people, salary, office environment. Not a bad place for new hires to gain experience.

    Cons

A management team with no shortage of opportunities for improvement. Experienced people should consider other opportunities - especially in Houston where the job market is thriving.

    Advice to Management

The new CEO needs to totally remake the management team and professionalize all the management practices. It's a very reactive and unprofessional management environment. Real shame that if he were to do that then this could be a really fantastic place to work. But correcting all the problems will take years.
