I worked at Aston University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Friendly colleagues. Diverse student body.

    Cons

Management is fully focused on immediate metrics instead of long term. A lot of decision making is poor, backed up by poor data. There is a big disconnect between senior management and teaching and support staff. Teaching load is very heavy, which is excerberated by heavy bureaucracy, poor planning and under-resourced support structures. In many departments staff turnover is high and morale is low.

I have been working at Aston University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Small campus, generally a nice place to work within reach of Birmingham city centre, made lots of friends.

    Cons

Virtually no advancement opportunties for support staff. Lack of fair promotion system means that those who can curry favour with senior management tend to get promoted above the best people for the job. This is in contrast to academics, who have a procedure in place for promotion.

    Advice to Management

Let's talk about job satisfaction instead of avoiding the issue.

I have been working at Aston University part-time

    Pros

Small and intimate university with lots of international students. Staff are friendly and helpful in most cases. A lot of interesting and knowledgeable academics to work with.

    Cons

Opportunities are very limited due to "lack of funds". Secondment opportunities are non-existent. Relationship between academic and support staff are very strained in some departments. Support staff feel very undervalued and unappreciated. Departments struggle due to lack of staff, again due to lack of funds in the budget apparently.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in your staff and develop them more. Keep an accurate inventory of the talent pool you have and invest in it. Work on integrating the academic and support staff more so the relationship is improved and everyone works more cohesively.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Aston University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Small university, a community, generally pays better salaries than other universities

    Cons

Currently (2015) undergoing major financial problems which management are trying to solve by firing support staff and increasing faculty work load

    Advice to Management

Invest in people rather than try to cut positions and disrespect the work we do
