I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

An exciting scientific atmosphere coupled with good work life balance. There is a current focus on individual development and plenty of opportunities for secondments.

    Cons

If you're joining as a new Grad or PhD there are already a lot of talented people in the organisation looking for promotion. Hence promotion could be slower than you expect. There is a gradual trend in outsourcing jobs to Asia, with some functions now at a minimum number of UK roles

    Advice to Management

    Employ more scientists in Europe/USA!

I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

CEO has brought in a change in thinking with a strong focus on following the science. Employees at all levels are encouraged to be "leaders" and so feel empowered to make informed decisions without the need for constant approval. Plenty of development opportunities, good pay, bonuses and share options. Company now on upward trajectory with exciting pipeline especially in oncology so can look forward to a bright future.

    Cons

Badly under-resourced in R&D so expect long hours and plenty of stress.

    Advice to Management

Senior manager need to understand resourcing problems at "work-face" and pay more than lip-service to the problem ie prioritise pipeline.

    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Open work environment, chance to explore many different sides of the business, employee engagement often high

    Cons

company uninterested in promoting people based on performance (many employees are the in same role of decades), responsibilities well outstrip remuneration, pay low on global scale. a minority of the company drives most of the work.

    Advice to Management

realize that to attract and retain top international talent pay and promotion schedule must reflect global value not arcane value generated for Sweden.

I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Nice environment, not a lot of pressure, good life-work balance, managers stay out of your way as long as you do your job well

    Cons

Too much politics. Not a clear science ladder. Promoting mainly women to reach a 50% equality (which makes it very discriminating). Too many people with fuzzy objectives like "improving culture"

    Advice to Management

Stablish a true scientific ladder based on science and merits. Set up clear criteria for promotions, increase transparency regarding salaries and rewards

I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I work as a PhD experimental scientist in a biology department at the very start of the drug discovery and development process. The work is varied and the experimental questions are very interesting. There is reasonable access to high-end equipment, The staff is very global and the working language is english. There are currnetly, good opportunities for publishing, if you regard that as a plus.

    Cons

The work is very intense, with little opportunity for internal promotion and very little talent management. The working environment is uninspiring. IT support is extremely ineffective for work that requires more complex computational resources.

    Advice to Management

Management is remarkably ineffective at facilitating scientific work, and many problems that are clearly management problems are instead left to the scientific staff to deal with.

I worked at AstraZeneca full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good working environmnet and experiment equipments

    Cons

Compare to ten years ago, AZ leaders (all levels) become more and more be concentrated on playiny political games instead of science and drug development. This is basic if one want to keep one's position due to the current company's culture.

    Advice to Management

You have or once had excellent employee but your leadership teams are not good enough. They make a bottle neck of AZ's development today. Strategy: let employee review leaders performance regularly so that they will learn how to be as a good leader and they will learn how important to work hard and respect his/her emplyee. Reward a good leader has more impact than an ordinary people.

I have been working at AstraZeneca

    Pros

Good mid-level management. Vastly improved in recent years (2009 onwards).

    Cons

Headed at the very top by sales people who have a short-term vision and shareholder focus when it comes to R&D. Short-term vision can be quite detrimental in an industry where product development cycles are about a decade. The current management will be long gone by the time the real trouble manifests itself, which explains the incentive to 'create value' now, at the cost of future failure.

    Advice to Management

Good R&D is the life-blood of pharmaceutical development.
