I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Atmosphere and people are great. Lots of offices all around the world and opportunities to travel between. I worked in multiple office for Atkins and have had a similar experience throughout.

    Cons

Not the best projects if you want smaller commercial experience. Offices are a bit dated but this is getting better. Recent redundancies were poorly handled.

    Negative Outlook
    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working day can be flexible but is very dependent on the attitude of immediate line management. Local teams are all enthusiastic and great to work with

    Cons

Lots of Middle Management shouting the words "Digital Engineering" with no concept of what it actually means. Trying to focus on innovation but failing due to productivity targets. As SNC-Lavalin takeover, middle management are micro-managing and causing engineers to leave.

    Advice to Management

Reduce productivity requirements if you want to innovate. Middle Management needs to be reduced, too much focus on getting a time sheet in on time.

"Unfair internal politics, no opportunities, layers upon layers of incompetent management"

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good work-life balance, it is not a sweat-shop like some other engineering companies. Good benefits. Good for new graduates as the company does not care much about competency or experience: new graduates can get an opportunity to advance very early in their career without any competence, knowledge and experience.

    Cons

Unfair internal politics, incompetent clueless managers will dictate your life, from the project you are given to the supervisor/manager you are given (and some of them are very mean). Nothing is based on the actual competency of staff, just politics and appearances. Hard work, experience and/or competency are never rewarded. (The only reward is bullying) If their incompetent managers fail to find work, Atkins will just...

    Advice to Management

Try to value more those who are competent and actually do work. Always check twice what you are told, some people really blag their way and/or are malicious. Introduce a new system which looks after people and rewards the right people. Also there are way too many layers of management. A single employee has at least 10 managers above him, and not a single one knows about the employee or is familiar what the employee actually...

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at Atkins full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Some good engineers and decent projects. In London there are big projects that incorporate victorian era infrastructure with new build. This can be fun and challenging.

    Cons

Far too many managers and an opaque management system. At times it feels like managers and engineers operate with completely different priorities. There is a big push for engineering to be done "offshore", where labour is much cheaper.

    Advice to Management

Career progression and reward for the efforts of engineers - who are ultimately responsible for delivering the projects and for the reputation of the capability of the business - is equally important. Engineers must be valued.
