    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Big organisation. In theory, plenty of opportunities. Very Sydney & Melbourne centric for growth and promotions. Good working conditions (except pay).

    Cons

Cuts cuts cuts. Public service gutted by recent governments. Legal department continually being shrunk, and quality / interesting work outsourced. Overworked without suitable compensation. "Do more with less" wears thin, fast. No accountability for SES.

    Advice to Management

External ethos needs management to start paying staff better. Less bullying.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interesting, varied and meaningful work. Relaxed culture with generally bright and enthusiastic people from diverse backgrounds. Links to Treasury and other Government departments. Safe and supportive environment to learn the ropes and develop your skills.

    Cons

Senior management lacking in basic HR/ leadership skills, with behaviour towards their staff that constantly undermines this organisation’s true potential. Recruitment/ promotion processes are generally arbitrary and unscientific. Prepare to take full responsibility for your capability development and career progression and god help you if your manager doesn’t support you in that regard.

    Advice to Management

Advice to management: Learn how to lead effectively. Walk the talk. No, but really.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

Flexible work hours, solid pay, good people, challenging work, internal mobility, good overall conditions

    Cons

The bureaucracy can be tough to handle at times. In complex matters with too many stakeholders things can move very very slowly which can be frustrating. But this is true of many large organizations.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

    Fantastic working conditions and culture.

    Cons

Career mobility can seem random with inconsistent internal hiring processes and forced movements due to 'business needs'.

    Advice to Management

Tools for individual career progression become tokenistic when there are hiring freezes or forced movements.
