I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

important work that makes a huge contribution to the country

    Cons

Management has allowed cliques to form and you are either in or out. Senior managers have surrounded themselves with yes men and have diluted the talent pool

    Advice to Management

    Build up talent

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, high pay at the lower APS levels for the work undertaken, flexible working hours.

    Cons

Outside of Canberra and Sydney (I've worked for the ATO in both these cities, as well as Brisbane and Melbourne) a very unresponsive, slow, unfocused and risk-averse management culture. Progression depends on business line, but is often quite slow. Higher APS levels are not paid as well as pvt sector (but more flexible work arrangements). VERY limited salary options.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff, question your own motives, and consider what is right for the business, not yourself. Consider contracting EL2 management and above with retention based on performance.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexibility in hours, generous employer superannuation contributions, career progression opportunities

    Cons

Low staff morale and poor management (focused on numbers and lacking people skills) in some areas. Procedures and processes can be outdated or hard to understand.

    Advice to Management

Have an understanding of what drives your staff to increase productivity and efficiency and this will reduce absenteeism.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Great working environment Friendly colleagues Excellent pay and conditions Generous breaks including 6 minute per hour OH&S breaks Rewarding project Working with Assistant Commissioners and Commissioners on important work Caring about diversity and training staff on Depression In The Workplace Being offered study leave even though I was non-ongoing

      Cons

Being told that I wasn't worth being treated well as I was non-ongoing. Being on a 3 month contract Lack of on-going roles at the time Hearing on-going colleagues whinge about their pay and conditions was annoying

      Advice to Management

Treat your non-ongoing staff with the same respect as your on-going staff. Provide adequate training

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

There's challenging work along with decent career opportunities across a wide variety of work that would surprise most given it's the ATO. Change is embraced now more than ever before and can be seen in the renewed approaches to work and technology. The colleagues I've worked with have been motivated and great to work with.

      Cons

Like any workplace, and especially in one as large as the ATO there's a variety of areas/people. Whilst I've heard stories about people, areas and teams that sound less than ideal this isn't an experience that I've had or witnessed. Performance management remains a challenge, but one that is being addressed more effectively than in the past. It's certainly not the public service of even 5 years ago.

      Advice to Management

Continue to look for feedback, accept failures and learn from them rather than finding ways to paint everything as a success.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

      - Many opportunities to work on different projects across different departments - The reinvention program has had a significant and noticeable impact on improving the culture. Staff are now more open to change and continuous improvement. - Management are supportive of flexible working arrangements - Great work/life balance - Lots of learning and development opportunities

      Cons

Working in a large organisation has its downsides as it can mean that work/projects can be stalled due to the many stakeholders that need to be involved.

      Advice to Management

The change program was a necessary initiative and continues to make a positive impact, so don't lose momentum.
