I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, high pay at the lower APS levels for the work undertaken, flexible working hours.

    Cons

Outside of Canberra and Sydney (I've worked for the ATO in both these cities, as well as Brisbane and Melbourne) a very unresponsive, slow, unfocused and risk-averse management culture. Progression depends on business line, but is often quite slow. Higher APS levels are not paid as well as pvt sector (but more flexible work arrangements). VERY limited salary options.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff, question your own motives, and consider what is right for the business, not yourself. Consider contracting EL2 management and above with retention based on performance.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Conditions are excellent. Leave entitlements generous, Superannuation above 15% employer contribution. Technology tools becoming contemporary and in line with corporate organisations.

    Cons

Changing government brings uncertainty to employment status of APS employees (for any government department).

I worked at Australian Taxation Office

    Pros

One of the best pay & conditions in the APS. (Usually) great people to work with. If you can handle the normal level of bureaucratic rubbish that you always find in the public service it's worth the huge effort you have to put into your application, interview, etc

    Cons

Organisation pushes flexibility & work/life balance but it's entirely dependant on the person in charge of your section whether this is the case. Never work in the call centres unless you enjoy no flexibility & regularly dealing with customers who are angry or upset (especially if you work in the debt collection area)

    Advice to Management

Don't try & put your "stamp" on your area as soon as you get promoted - it was usually working fine before you got there & you just create more work for everyone else for little gain. Talk to the people actually doing the work before you make changes or the are almost always wrong!!!

I worked at Australian Taxation Office

    Pros

    - Reasonable pay and conditions for expected work outcomes - A large workplace with lots of different areas you can have a diversified (yet pretty miserable) career.

    Cons

    - In my area a very 'boys club' culture. Harrassed as a young female in the area and it was tolerated by management. - No support to do your actual job (like budgets to travel to meet with taxpayers you were audtiting in different cities, or getting professional statements like valuations to progress your work). - Different expectations based on ability - not level. APS 3's...

    Advice to Management

    - You only need about 1/4 of the people you have in your audit functions. Sadly through retrenchment you have cleaned out a lot of the talent - not the baggage.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

Challenging and highly complex environment with many opportunities to work on the leading edge technologies and excellent work life balance flexible working hours

    Cons

Lack of accountability in upholding the APS values and getting away with such an approach. Highly political and subjective on key issues.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than a year

    Pros

In my area, extremely smart, hardworking, professional colleagues. Interesting projects.

    Cons

As per the entire APS, performance management of underperformers is useless, so you can have dead wood even at the EL1 and EL2 level.
