I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time for less than a year

    Pros

-Some teams are good to work with -Your experience depends on which area you're in

    Cons

    - Toxic culture of bullying & nepotism - Good workers are set up to fail or driven out -Google "ATO bullying Four Corners" - Unlikely to change unless there's an inquiry, which is unlikely

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending it's just a couple of bad apples. You know these problems have been going for years. Stop promoting incompetent bullies and fix the culture

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, high pay at the lower APS levels for the work undertaken, flexible working hours.

    Cons

Outside of Canberra and Sydney (I've worked for the ATO in both these cities, as well as Brisbane and Melbourne) a very unresponsive, slow, unfocused and risk-averse management culture. Progression depends on business line, but is often quite slow. Higher APS levels are not paid as well as pvt sector (but more flexible work arrangements). VERY limited salary options.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff, question your own motives, and consider what is right for the business, not yourself. Consider contracting EL2 management and above with retention based on performance.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There's challenging work along with decent career opportunities across a wide variety of work that would surprise most given it's the ATO. Change is embraced now more than ever before and can be seen in the renewed approaches to work and technology. The colleagues I've worked with have been motivated and great to work with.

    Cons

Like any workplace, and especially in one as large as the ATO there's a variety of areas/people. Whilst I've heard stories about people, areas and teams that sound less than ideal this isn't an experience that I've had or witnessed. Performance management remains a challenge, but one that is being addressed more effectively than in the past. It's certainly not the public service of even 5 years ago.

    Advice to Management

Continue to look for feedback, accept failures and learn from them rather than finding ways to paint everything as a success.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The ATO offers the opportunity to do meaningful work that makes a difference to the lives of Australians. There is huge opportunity for growth and development, as well as flexibility and the ability to balance life and work.

    Cons

People at the ATO are passionate and committed, but can be slow to change - although the organisation's reinvention program has seen that improve in recent years.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Flexible shift choices - great while I was completing my postgraduate degree - Work with some very intelligent people (and some not so much) - Great pay rates for casual employment

    Cons

    - Staff rarely get laid off at the ATO (as is common in many government organisations) and the lack of consequences for poor performance is evident through some lazy staff who show up to work to do the bare minimum - Training was often disorganised and rarely followed up on - Inconsistent KPI checks - It would've been great if my team leader took the time to learn my name after years of working there

    Advice to Management

I understand it's difficult with a casual workforce, but recognising the efforts of the hardworking employees would go a long way.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office

    Pros

If you want to bludge then the ATO is the place to be.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is very bad. Ancient technology is used. Upper management have no idea on what is going in the IT Industry.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office part-time

    Pros

Good super scheme and flexible hours

    Cons

Pay not great. Stressful job. Your job can change focus every few months so it is hard to be fully trained in what you do. Loyality & years of experience is not valued. Best not to have an injury as management will try to push u out the door. Work for ATO as a last resort. Friendships here r very shallow. Office is stats driven. Output is more important for this org than quality of your work.

    Advice to Management

Get their act together and stop changing team focus so often. Need to put on more auditors to keep the taxpayers honest instead of turning a blind eye to non compliance especially tradies. Fraud in the cash economy is raging that is why there is not enough taxes coming in to run the country. It should be viewed that people do not like paying tax and will do anything to avoid paying their fair share. If u request a tax receipt for quotes from a tradie then it is likely that they will over quote to get out of this reportable job. Tradies are florishing as a lot of their jobs are not taxed and declared on their business records. Taxable income and their lifestyles need to be looked at for undisclosed income.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

Great culture at the ATO, probably more professional than other departments. Staff are well mannered and do not swear in meetings etc. which is prevalent in other departments

    Cons

Career development is not great due to government job cuts lately. It's also difficult to find a good manager/mentor who is going to improve you as a professional.

    Advice to Management

Create better mentoring programs from senior management. EL1 employees have very little access to senior management due to the hierarchical structure of the organisation.
