I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time

    Pros

Flexible work hours, solid pay, good people, challenging work, internal mobility, good overall conditions

    Cons

The bureaucracy can be tough to handle at times. In complex matters with too many stakeholders things can move very very slowly which can be frustrating. But this is true of many large organizations.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, high pay at the lower APS levels for the work undertaken, flexible working hours.

    Cons

Outside of Canberra and Sydney (I've worked for the ATO in both these cities, as well as Brisbane and Melbourne) a very unresponsive, slow, unfocused and risk-averse management culture. Progression depends on business line, but is often quite slow. Higher APS levels are not paid as well as pvt sector (but more flexible work arrangements). VERY limited salary options.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff, question your own motives, and consider what is right for the business, not yourself. Consider contracting EL2 management and above with retention based on performance.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Many opportunities to work on different projects across different departments - The reinvention program has had a significant and noticeable impact on improving the culture. Staff are now more open to change and continuous improvement. - Management are supportive of flexible working arrangements - Great work/life balance - Lots of learning and development opportunities

    Cons

Working in a large organisation has its downsides as it can mean that work/projects can be stalled due to the many stakeholders that need to be involved.

    Advice to Management

The change program was a necessary initiative and continues to make a positive impact, so don't lose momentum.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office

    Pros

Flexible working arrangements is a big plus as well as the ability to move in and out of roles.

    Cons

You don't get promoted here. You have to apply for a higher level role.

I have been working at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Claims that they offer flexible working arrangements.

    Cons

Reality is some senior managers don't like staff that work part time or work from home. Micromanaging from senior managers. A culture of accuse first and get the facts later if ever.

    Advice to Management

Practise what you preach. Words alone aren't enough when it's all empty promises.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pay relative to the rest of the public service Flexible work hours

    Cons

In smaller offices (I.e. Not Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney) you will find it very hard to get promoted. There is very little opportunity Management do not care about staff and have no idea how to run a business or make informed decisions

    Advice to Management

Stop treating the APS like private enterprise - it's different for a reason. Don't belittle or patronise staff. Be more transparent and be decent (because you are not opaque enough to be as awful as you are). Get rid of the commissioner.

I worked at Australian Taxation Office

    Pros

    - Equal Opportunity Employer for both men/women - Great leave benefits - Standard working hours - Flexible working hours

    Cons

    - Work load is up and down depending on projects that are happening - Working with some contracting firms used can impact the flexible working arrangement - Career progression is determined by standard apply/interview process - so depends on availability of funding for positions, and resourcing requirements more than whether you're doing a good job

    Advice to Management

    - appreciate your staff more and stand up to higher management more. - Dates aren't properly considered and staff are frequently asked to work long hours during peak periods because proper planning wasn't in place for delivery timeframes - Employ better architects. Out of date decisions and designs make for poor implementation strategies and products.

    Pros

Great work life balance. Very supportive Staff Very flexible work hours Not much pressure at any given time that may keep your mind at ease

    Cons

Not many opportunities to learn new things Very slow growth rate Traces as a mere support staff as contractors do majority of deliverables
