I have been working at Babcock International Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Peers genuinely care about each other. The work can really make a difference to communities. Salary is okay.

    Cons

All about the talk - lots of promises and incredibly little follow through and delivery. There’s always an excuse. Management seem to think that moving at a glacial pace is actually normal, and they reinforce it through back slapping at every minor achievement. HR are completely useless and don’t respond or if they do it’s far too late. Apparently ignoring people and their needs is okay if you’re busy or don’t... have an answer. This approach is consistent from top down - you can email a senior leader and never hear from them. Which brings me to - people don’t matter at Babcock. There is no culture to speak of, people get away with the most toxic of behaviours and don’t get called on it. And so called leaders are too busy to spend any time with their teams. For example a team “leader” can get away with cancelling team meetings at a moments notice - every, single week. Complete disappointment to work for a company that’s 20-30 years in the past and doesn’t know what diversity is beyond middle aged white males.

    Advice to Management

Make an effort at least. Encourage leadership to drop their self-importance and actually listen to their teams, instead of finding excuses as to why they can’t. Say it then DO it. Develop a culture of “can do”, and maybe remind people if you don’t want to do it, then just don’t say you will. Easy. Implement values and behaviours that are modelled from top down. And finally - stop spreading people so thinly... they feel trapped and then become part of the ongoing problems.
