I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than a year)
Pros
- Perks are great - lots of offsites, global trainings and opportunities to spend time with peers builds a great network of friends in the office
- Work is incredibly varied, in ~2 years have worked in multiple industries and each project is different
- The people are incredibly smart, diverse and fun. The culture in general is amazing!
- A lot of Managers / Partners really care about the juniors, they will happily just chat to you about career moves etc. and are generally fairly approachable
- Great post-Bain options
- Flexibility options can be great - opportunities to live / work abroad, take externships and Leave of Absence
- Constant emphasis on improvements in the office, weekly surveys to track satisfaction and changes generally made on the feedback where possible
Cons
- Hours are long, often with heavy travel also which can be tough on the work-life balance
- Pay in London is significantly below other Bain offices and worse than salaries in other industries that Bainies are qualified for
- Flexibility options can be difficult to take, the options for transfers etc are there, but they are more difficult to take than recruiting sells it as
Advice to Management
Keep driving sustainability and increase the value proposition in London
I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than a year)
Pros
- Steep learning curve
- Lots of responsibilities early on
- Interesting and high impactful work
- Generally capable and smart bosses/ teammates
- Very fun and tight-knit peer group
- Opens up lots of opportunities (from headhunters)
Cons
- Hours can be long (though compared with peers in other consulting firms, Bain seems to be better generally)
- Staffing has most of the say in what projects you will be on, especially as a relatively new joiner
Advice to Management
- Make sure that the case management team really care about the welfare of the team; just a couple of poor case experiences is enough to cause churn
- Make sure that lateral hires and office transfers acculturate themselves to London (e.g. be caring of the team, actively listen to feedback, aim for 8pm finishes and not midnights)
I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than 3 years)
Pros
Incredible people, interesting client issues, huge variety and a meritocratic organisation which encompasses people of many different backgrounds and personalities
Cons
Hours can be long and stressful; limited opportunity for public sector work
Advice to Management
Invest more resources in developing our Sustainability practice - we lag competitors
I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (Less than a year)
Pros
Awesome culture all round, stimulating work and flexibility options
Cons
Work/life balance can be an issue like in most professional services (although I think Bain does a better job than most!)
I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than a year)
Pros
I'm continuously amazed by the number of offsites, trainings, international get-togethers that Bain offers its employees. It reminds me of the perks my parents had in the 80s/90s, which seem to have totally disappeared from the corporate landscape.
The perks are not only fun, they are amazing learning experiences, they provide us with support and are a reminder of the overall mission.
Cons
Often achievements from previous work experience aren't recognized as Bain has a strong culture of homegrown skills and capabilities. This is something that should be improved
Advice to Management
Acknowledge employment history outside of Bain more

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than a year)
Pros
Great learning into different industries / functionalities
Great collegiate culture with lots of peers to work and play with
Local staffing model vs. intense travel at peer firms
Cons
Extremely hierarchical
Cases outside of Private Equity can be a bit random, mainly focused on cost, project management, etc.
Burn-outs happening at increasing clip
Advice to Management
Be less commercial and sell more interesting work, focus on retaining talent/avoid burnout
I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (More than a year)
Pros
Very interesting work; Real efforts to help consultants to maintain a reasonable work life balance; Plenty of opportunities to take 'breaks' and try new things (social impact externships, office transfers, MBA)
Cons
Consulting is a tough industry, particularly in the top tier - there is nothing that management could do to make the lifestyle 'great' all the time
Advice to Management
Take some steps to tone down the emphasis on promotions - the incentive isn't needed; Keep going with the efforts to create a more 'best case experiences' - they are working
