I worked at Bain & Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Amazing amount of learning, super smart people, strong professional development opportunities. No one signs up for consulting thinking it's going to be a walk in the park. You will work damn hard. The variety that comes with projects means some are stellar and some are rough. But you will learn an incredible amount. And Bain's culture is a mile ahead of any other consulting firms- they put a lot of effort into finding and retaining great people. Can honestly say I never disliked anyone at my time at Bain and that's incredible. Was proud to see Bain take some big steps to confront racial inequality. I hope they've followed through with some of the promises made in June.

    Cons

Hours, burnout, inconsistency in HR/management. The hours can be really tough long term, which is why most people leave. The best at Bain find their niche and how to balance life and work. Management can depend based on project but overall the company puts a lot of work into developjng managers.

"Generally good culture but people are increasingly getting driven to the ground"

I have been working at Bain & Company

    Pros

Overall the culture (in comparison to BCG/McKinsey from what I gather) is great - mostly great people, fun and open work place. I have come across some bad apples though, they do exist even at firms like Bain but generally people are smart and genuine. There is so much flexibility to pursue things your want - leave of absences, international office transfers, externships are all common and a nice way to give you a break from consulting if you need it (you probably will). Needless to say the skill set you develop and the speed at which you develop it is invaluable.

    Cons

There seems to be a trend for people to work longer hours, the 55-hour average week doesn't exist. Overscoped/underresourced projects are more common than not and everyone I know has been driven to the ground on multiple projects. Working in consulting builds a great skill set but it comes at a cost - practically no work/life balance during the week unless you are happy seeing more of Bain than family/friends etc. It can be really cliquey and there are people who have few friends beyond Bain. Compared to corporate salaries, consulting salaries don't appear competitive given how hard you work, however you need the skill set to transition to corporates.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For the right enquiring, hard working mind, Bain is an amazing place to work. Great problems to solve, great people to work with, great clients and a great apprenticeship process to reall accelerate talent to its full potential. Over the course of a career, there is real felxibility to get the work - life balance right. If you live for interesting work, this is a great place.

    Cons

It is hard work, and not everyone has the passion and mental flexibility to make it work. And if you work to live, and want lots of evenings for other interests, this is not the right place for you.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people who really care about both their colleagues and solving client problems. It is refreshing how team-oriented people are. Excellent professional development opportuniities. Very motivating environment.

    Cons

Hours can be long, although compensated for by recognition from managers / partners and rewarding work. Although you can influence which project/s you get to work on, you don't have full control - it is driven by business needs.
