"Nice company but Belfast office in a poor state"

I worked at Baker McKenzie full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Globally the company is good to work for with plenty of decent people working there. Good social life/events, reasonable work/life balance.

    Cons

Management, notably on the financial side, have very much benefited from being in the right place at the right time and are noticeably out of their depth - on technical, professional and personal levels. There remains an unwillingness to relinquish control to junior management which has resulted in high turnover and tactical promotions of "yes men" to fill the void and create buffers between management and those who will question how/why in order to improve things. A bizarre approach to (internal) client management from senior management means that questions are seen as bothering the "client" and should be avoided at all costs - resulting in hours spent working on something that could be resolved within minutes when the question is asked. Any issues raised are seen as a "negative outlook" and frowned upon whether these issues are relevant or not. Favouritism is utterly rife both on a team and individual level. The same old faces get promotion after promotion (some deserved, the majority not) while it seems to be a complete lottery whether a team is afforded overtime or not compared to their peers. One team in particular was afforded an annual payrise and bonus, an individual gift voucher and a paid for lunch as well as their paid overtime in comparison to others on the same pay grade receiving a standard pay rise and bonus whilst receiving nothing in return for considerable overtime worked in the previous quarter. This favouritism also stretched to computer hardware - teams (10-strong) were afforded two screens without asking (one of which was used to have Spotify open full screen) whilst the team of three I worked in, having asked for two screens from day one, was told no - despite it being near impossible to analyse spreadsheets on one screen. We were also constantly promised Tableau access but "had to wait for licenses to be freed up" rather than just getting the three people access - this is a multi-billion dollar company, not a two-bit operation. The company portrays an image of being supportive of those with mental health issues but this is another element on which senior management (one member in particular) falls short. Instead of taking a duty of care, they are more concerned with covering their own back and maintaining the status quo so they won't have to act on an on-going issue and instead blaming the indivual who has raised the issue.
