Former Employee - Practice Manager in Boston, MA

I worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Excellent clinical staff. Potential for growth. Interested in innovation.

    Cons

Unclear mandate from upper management. Besides "more" (more money, more patients), what is the goal of the medical center? What does "human first" actually mean aside from a clever marketing slogan? Who is the BI in BI Lahey Health? Interest in innovation is not the same as supporting the process of innovation.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to be supportive to staff and patients-- just seeing "more" patients will not result in better care or even more market share in the long run. Physician and staff burn out correlates strongly with patient dissatisfaction. "More" is not an identity and is not the answer any more than shoveling more coal on a fire that is not lit produces more fire. Address triage systems-- get the right patient to the... right doctor at the right time. Educate patients so they know what the clinical plan is and how each visit fits into that plan-- do not just throw appointments and referrals at them. Track clinical outcomes-- there are often simple and cheap ways to do this.
