      Made friends out of misery, chance to progress if you hate your life and want to spend 60+ hours at work

      Cons

      Long hours, no guaranteed legal breaks during shift, 'standby' shifts on top of many hours where you have to sit and wait at home as you can be called in any minute, lack of managerial support, unrealistic expectations from managers and customers, strict uncomfortable uniform, have to pay for missing receipts from your OWN MONEY

      Becoming worse every year

      Their main value when I joined 5 years ago was all you need is love. This is non existent now. New management in company led to the sacking of many opps managers and replaced with money motivated sociopaths. No respect to staff. Were openly told after having our benefits cut that if we didn’t like it there is the door. After coming back from first lockdown they took a hostile approach to cutting staff and purposely made the job more difficult by cutting hours so that people working would have to work to the brink of collapse so that they either quit or hope to find a way to push them out. I finally managed to leave after 6 years at the company and leaving as part of management since working my way up from the bottom. I was supposed to get extra holiday of 2 weeks after working 5 years and a card congratulating me. This was ignored both internally and at the company as a whole (was looking forward to my card). This just showed how much the company had changed from its roots and how corporate they have become. Used to get 50% off food this was then cut down to 25% only to be used twice a month (pre Covid) Managers got to eat anything of the menu within reason on shift. (Part of the motivation to become a manager). This got cut and only burger or Mac and cheese was offered (Pre-Covid). I would understand if Covid caused these issues but the fact is it wasn’t. They just wanted to make more money by cutting benefits. Also little of service charge is seen by staff as you get a top up on minimum wage by a pound or two and then they make thousands a day in service charge.

      Fellow staff members were welcoming and helpful

      Cons

      Only got to keep tips if they were cash otherwise it went to the company, never given the service charge, which many people paid in lieu of giving tips as they were under the impression it would be passed onto the staff that earns it. Often the service charge would far surpass what I would earn in wages - money which would have been helpful when it was a part time job. Management were poor with little sympathy and no boundaries. I was expected to miss university lectures to attend a Christmas menu tasting because 'its just one lecture'.
